MSC Cruises' MSC Operahas once again earned high marks in its most recent U.S. Public Health (USPH) inspection, reflecting the line's commitment to providing guests with the safest, healthiest and most secure vacation experience on land or sea. A division of the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC), USPH annually conducts two unannounced inspections of international cruise ships visiting U.S. ports to monitor their onboard cleanliness, food-handling and sanitation practices. About 400 inspections are made by the USPH each year.
MSC Operawas inspected Friday, 16 February and scored 99 out of 100. The ship has consistently earned "superior" scores since first arriving in North American waters in December 2004. MSC Operaalso earned scores of 99 on inspections conducted 28 January and 12 March 2006.
MSC Liricahas also consistently earned "superior" scores on USPH inspections, including a perfect score of 100 during its inspection on 22 April 2005.
As part of the voluntary inspection program, the CDC reviews the levels of sanitation on all passenger cruise ships arriving in U.S. ports. Ships are rated on whether the following items meet CDC standards: water, food preparation and storage, potential contamination of food, and general cleanliness, storage and repair. A score of 86 or higher is considered "satisfactory" By CDC.
"We are very proud of the consistent record of excellence that the MSC Opera and MSC Lirica have established and maintained during the Caribbean season," says Richard E. Sasso, president and CEO of MSC Cruises (USA). "Their performance on these important health inspections exemplifies the high standards MSC Cruises sets for the cruise experiences we offer our guests."
