The Summer Season of 36 cruises between 20 March and 27 November explores the North-Eastern Mediterranean over 7 nights and 8 days, departing from Venice (Italy) to call at Bari (Italy), Katakolon (Greece), Izmir (Turkey), Istanbul (Turkey) and then Dubrovnik (Croatia) before returning to Venice. There are 3 different winter itineraries starting in late November, all of which venture just a little further south in search of the sun, extending to Egypt. Firstly, there are seven 8-night cruises from Venice (Italy) to Bari (Italy), Rhodes (Greece), Alexandria (Egypt), Katakolon (Greece) and Dubrovnik (Croatia), then back to Venice. Then there is a choice of two
11-night winter itineraries which travel east to the Holy Land as well as Egypt. The first is available for two cruises only, following the route: Venice (Italy), Bari (Italy), Heraklion (Crete), Limassol (Cyprus), Haifa (Israel), Port Said (Egypt), Katakolon (Greece), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Trieste (Italy) and Venice. The second provides seven 11-night cruises which only differ from the above in calling at Ravenna instead of Trieste, taking guests from Venice (Italy) to Bari (Italy), Heraklion (Crete), Limassol (Cyprus), Haifa (Israel), Port Said (Egypt), Katakolon (Greece), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Ravenna (Italy) and then returning to Venice.
But let's take a look at these extraordinary ports of call in greater detail, together with just some of the opportunities that MSC Cruises offers to explore their natural, historic and cultural splendours.
The Venice excursions are not only varied and numerous - including the famous glass-blowing island of Murano, St. Mark's Square and of course a gondola ride - but are also organised so you can explore this magical city at your leisure twice - both when arriving and at the end your cruise as well.
Bari in Southern Italy is rich in history, from its city centre to the famous conical-roofed Trulli dry stone houses in the village of Alberobello and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sassi in Matera - cave dwellings and houses dug into the side of a ravine that have been inhabited for thousands of years.
Katakolon on the Greek mainland boasts superb beaches and the ancient town of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games with its unparalleled archaeological site, museum and great Greek gastronomy.
Izmir in Turkey is itself one of the oldest settlements in the Mediterranean, but also offers visits to the ancient Greek city of Ephesus with its massive theatre and the house where the Virgin Mary is believed to have lived her last years.
Istanbul in Turkey is rich in splendour as the fifth largest city in the world, the only metropolis to straddle two continents and the historical capital of four empires. MSC Crociere offers an array of exciting excursions, including the famous Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmet mosque and Tokapi palace.
Delightful Dubrovnik in Croatia is a UNESCO World Heritage walled medieval port that leaves guests spoilt for choice. Choose from historic city tours, sunbathing, snorkelling and even a farm visit with fruit picking, folk music and food tasting.
Alexandria in Egypt is not only famous as the country's Hellenic and Roman capital, but is also the perfect base to explore Cairo, together with the pyramids and Sphinx of Giza.
The Greek island of Rhodes is as renowned for its crusader architecture as its ancient history and natural beauty. Guests can go scuba diving, visit the valley of the butterflies or wander the charming town of Lindos and its ancient Acropolis perched high above.
Heraklion in Crete offers incredible excursions around the lovely local villages and countryside as well as to the famous Minoan palaces of Knossos and Phaistos.
Limassol in Cyprus is a thriving port that dates back to Richard the Lionheart, though human artefacts from as early as 2,000 BC have been found in the area. Guests can tour the Temple of Apollo, Kolossi Castle, Paphos and Larnaca, the oldest city in Cyprus.
Haifa in Israel is a modern port with a history dating back to biblical times and is an ideal base to explore Galilee, where Jesus grew up and preached. The excursions naturally include Nazareth, Cana and the Sea of Galilee.
Port Said in Egypt is well known for standing at the entrance to the Suez Canal, but is also a great gateway to the magic of Egypt, offering the same varied excursions that MSC Cruises provides from Alexandria.
Trieste in Italy is uniquely cosmopolitan as a melting pot of Germanic, Latin and Slavic cultures. Guests can tour the elegant city and magnificent Hapsburg palace of Miramare Castle but also explore Ljubljana, the beautiful capital of neighbouring Slovenia.
Ravenna is rich in history as the one-time capital of the Western Roman Empire, offering excursions that include San Marino, the smallest republic in the world.
Visiting many of the greatest centres of religion and civilisation in the Mediterranean and indeed in the world, MSC Magnifica offers unforgettable experiences that not only feed the senses, but the mind and soul.
