MSC Orchestra is ready to leave Aker Yards, in St. Nazaire, France, to cruise to Civitavecchia, where her christening ceremony will take place on 14 May 2007.
Jacques Hardelay, President of Aker Yards, officially delivered the new ship to her owner, Gianluigi Aponte. The godmother at this ceremony was Mrs Alexa Aponte Vago.
MSC Orchestra is 92,400 grt, 60 metreshigh and 32 metreslong, with 16 decks, 13 of which are for passengers. The total capacity is 3,000 passengers in 1,275 cabins, 80% of which are ocean-view, most with a private balcony. The ship can reach a speed of 23 knots.
On board there is a power generating station with five groups of diesel-generators built by Wartsila. Each one produces 11.6 megawatts and generates the energy for all onboard facilities as well as the propulsion. Two electric 20.2 MW engines drive the two enormous propellers that are each 5.2 metresin diameter. The engines are connected to fivelatest-generation alternators manufactured by Leroy Somer. The whole is run by an automated system from Valmarine Norway.
MSC Orchestra is the only new ship entering service in 2007 completely designed and project-managed by Italian architects - a perfect combination of elegance and taste that personifies the ‘made in Italy' label.
"The arrival of MSC Orchestra reaffirms our strategy to attract the European traveller," said Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises. "She is a unique cruise ship that showcases the style and elegance for which Italy is renowned globally. Our commercial success is proof that we have made the right decisions."
Once in Italy, MSC Orchestra will head for Civitavecchia to be christened. Here, on 14 May 2007, fleet godmother Sophia Loren will cut the ribbon attached to the traditional bottle of champagne. The christening ceremony will also see an exclusive concert conducted by Ennio Morricone.
After christening, the new ship will depart for Genoa on her inaugural 11-night cruise in the western Mediterranean. From 2 June 2007 MSC Orchestra will depart Venice every Saturday for 7-night cruises, calling into Greece, Turkey and Croatia.
