MSC Orchestra, the newest addition to the MSC Cruises fleet, will be christened in Civitavecchia on 14 May 2007. She has successfully completed her technical tests and sea trials which began on 22 March 2007. All commissioning tests carried out on the plant, engines and motor systems were positive, certifying the technical aspects of this jewel of naval engineering.

MSC Orchestra departed from St. Nazaire to cruise in the Bay of Biscay, Atlantic Ocean. Following a specified technical route, she reached a maximum speed of 23 knots. The seaworthiness of MSC Orchestra was also tested by varying the speed over the 3 consecutive days of the sea trials. The test for a"crash stop" was also carried out. This brings the ship to a total standstill as in the case of anemergency, together with the automatic control of the plant, the generators and propulsion systemsincluding a "black out" test when all power is cut off and the ship's generators must restart.

All tests were overseen by the technical department of the French Aker Yards, surveyors of the Naval Register Bureau Veritas, which will in turn release the classification for MSC Orchestra. The Aker team worked together with a team from the construction company of the onboard plant (the diesel motors, electrical motors, propulsion motors and evaporators). In total 350 professionals participated in the trials certifying perfect working order and the release of the Certificate R32, as required by MSC Cruises.

Among the innovative technologies for maximum passenger comfort, this ship also offers the MABS system (multi air blowing system). This system of nozzles placed under the stern, creates a cushion of air acting as a shock absorber between the hull and the turbulence generated by the propellers. This reduces the noise vibrations of the engines by up to 5dB.

MSC Orchestra is currently at the Aker Yards in St. Nazaire, France, prior to her delivery on 30 April to MSC Cruises when flags will be exchanged and the shipwill leave France to head for Civitavecchia where she will be christened on 14 May 2007.

MSC Orchestra is the second MSC Cruises ship in the Musica class. She represents the company's continuing development and its practice of building larger vessels. Studio De Jorio Design International ensured Italian styling for the interior, which is the hallmark of all MSC Cruises' ships.

MSC Orchestra, with its rating of 90,000 tonnes, length of 293 metres and width of 33 metres, will accommodate 3,013 passengers in 1275 cabins, 80% of which have ocean views with balconies. Her 22,000 square metres of public areas will include five restaurants (L'Ibiscus, Villa Borghese, La Piazzetta, Four Seasons, and Shanghai Chinese Restaurant), 10 bars including two open air bars, three meeting and conference rooms and the Body and Mind Spa covering 1,200 square metres of well-being space.

The new ship will set off for an inaugural 11-night cruise to France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before arriving in Venice. She will be stationed there from 2 June to the end of October, offering weekly 7-night cruises from Venice and Bari to Greece, Turkey and Croatia. MSC Orchestra will remain in the Mediterranean throughout the winter.
