Some of the biggest names in music and entertainment will congregate to light up the night in Dover for the official christening of MSC Poesia, the newest addition to the MSC Cruises fleet.
MSC Poesia is 93,300 tonnes and has 1,275 cabins for 2,550 passengers based on double occupancy per cabin. Sister ship to MSC Musica and MSC Orchestra, she is the perfect combination of style, elegance, modern technology, exciting entertainment and tasty gastronomy.
This exceptional event will welcome international artists such as Andrea Bocelli, who will perform an exclusive concert in the theatre.
The singer KT Tunstall, well known to Italians thanks to the single "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" chosen as the theme song for the Italian musical gala "Festivalbar 2005". Peter Grant the jazz musician from The Ronnie Scott's Orchestra and Annie Mac, DJ of BBC Radio 1.
At the event, the Royal Family will also be present as Prince and Princess Michael of Kent will be attending.
During the evening, American artist Brian Olsen will entertain the guests with his unique art genre. Well known are his portraits of famous musicians, created to spectacular strokes of music.
Following the tradition, MSC Poesia's godmother is Sophia Loren, the icon of Italian style throughout the world. At midnight on Saturday, 5 April, the actress with the Captain and the shipowner Gianluigi Aponte will cut the ribbon which will release the bottle of champagne onto the side of MSC Poesia, an auspicious sign in maritime tradition.
"We wanted to offer a unique launching ceremony, something never seen before," said Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises. "In traditional ceremonies, after cutting the ribbon, thousands of people board the ship so the common areas are jammed with people and it puts the ship under stress. Therefore we prefer to offer a real evening on board - actually, quite an extraordinary one - thanks to the presence of world-renowned artists. There will be several shows and concerts shown repeatedly throughout the evening. Everyone will be able to celebrate the arrival of this new ship, with her 22,000 square metres of public areas with the traditional high quality and refined style of MSC. Our guests will appreciate not only the hardware of an MSC cruise but also the software, which will truly make a difference."
After the christening ceremony, the inaugural cruise will depart for the most beautiful Irish ports, then onto Portugal, Spain, Italy and Croatia. MSC Poesia will reach Venice, where she will remain for the entire summer 2008 season, departing weekly for 7-night cruises calling into Bari, Katakolon, Izmir, Istanbul and Dubrovnik, before returning to Venice - the Serenissima.
MSC Poesia will offer guests the best of all that is Made in Italy, with a touch of the international. The same day Douglas Ward, author of the Berlitz Cruise-Guide, will also christen with Pierfrancesco Vago the Kaito Sushi Bar on board MSC Poesia. This typical Japanese restaurant is available on board her sister ship MSC Musica. The prestigious Berlitz Guide states "Kaito, the Japanese restaurant aboard MSC Musica provides a near-authentic taste of popular Japanese cold and hot dishes, including excellent sushi, sashimi, tempura, and noodles."
