MSC Cruises Has Just Posted the Following:
MSC Splendida not only uses the latest technology to provide superlative comfort and service on the most luxuriously appointed, smoothest and indeed largest ship ever commissioned by a European owner, but equally to achieve the highest standards of respect for the environment.
The substantial investments in leading edge systems include an Advanced Water Treatment plant that can process up to 1,500 cubic metres of liquid waste per day using a sophisticated five-stage process that produces water so pure it can be released straight into the sea without harming the ecosystem, although it is generally stored on board and emptied into the systems in port or re-used in technical services such as washing the decks.
Innovative technology in the cabins and public areas enables average energy savings of 25% thanks in part to a Cabin Monitoring System that "tells" the climate control system when cabin windows and balcony doors are opened.
Special clean incinerators handle paper and cardboard waste, while highly-efficient compacting machines and grinders are installed on board for the sorting and volume reduction of waste glass and aluminium, with all the latter being recycled.
It's this all-round attention to the environment that took MSC Splendida's twin ship MSC Fantasia to become the first ever passenger ship to receive the prestigious "6 Golden Pearls" award from international certification body Bureau Veritas (BV), recognition that it's one of the greenest ships in the world.
The "6 Golden Pearls" testify that MSC Fantasia's systems and practices meet the highest ecological standards, with the ship's advanced air, water and waste treatment systems each gaining a pearl and Cleanship 2 Class notation.
The final three pearls certify that operations on board comply with the ISO 14001 international environmental protection standard, OHSAS 18001 crew health and safety standard and ISO 22000 food quality and safety standard.
A similar certification process awaits MSC Splendida, which in using the same advanced systems is set to achieve the same outstanding results that also won MSC Fantasia the Green Planet Award 2008/2009 - the most prestigious environmental award in the Swiss travel and holiday sector - and a CIAL award for its recycling of aluminum containers and packaging.
Completing these green credentials, MSC Cruises was one of the first companies to sign up to the Venice Blue Flag agreement to reduce emissions in the Venice Lagoon through the use of diesel and low sulphur fuel.
The sea is MSC's element and the company cares about it passionately, also making an important commitment to World Environment Day, with free on-board screenings of the eco-documentary Home by photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, produced by Denis Carot, Luc Besson and François-Henri Pinault.
All in all, it's clear that MSC Cruises isn't just committed to cruising the world's beauty spots in luxury, but also to ensuring they're still there in all their beauty for generations to come.
