Mt. ROberts Trram in Juneau

We are debating about using the ship's excursion to book tickets to ride the Mt. Roberts tramway in Juneau.

Do we need to bother about this or can we just go to the tram and buy tickets when we arrive? On our last visit the weather was so bad you could not see the top of the Mt. and it would have been a waste to have tickets and nothing to see.

Thanks

We were there last July and had purchased our tickets through Princess, but when we arrived at the entrance to the tram station they were selling tickets for the same price. I probably would have just waited and bought mine there if I had known they would be available for purchase. It is definitely a must if you don't mind HIGH places and want to see the beauty of the area.

You don't need to buy ahead imho. The tram is right at the docks. Even if you tender you'll be let out really closely. And as mentioned, if the weather is bad you can pass.

If you're not afraid of heights I highly recommend the trip.

thanks ColDoc. i hope the price is worth it for only being able to be up at the top for about an hour. we will see if we do it or not according to the weather.

Buy your ticket early in the day. The ticket is good for all day long so if you want to go up in the morning and then again at sunset its just one price.

BTW The locally operated bus to Mendenhall Glacier is $5 each way and picks up right by the tramway.

Is the ride up very scary? How long does it take to get to the top? What can you see from there? What else do you recommend to do up there?

If you're afraid of heights I would think that the ride up would be very scary. You're hanging from a cable at a pretty decent height.
I'm guessing here but I think that the trip up and down is about 5 minutes? Someone could correct me on this.
On top there is hiking, a visitor center, gift shop and I think a restaurant. But mostly it's a spectacular view of Juneau, the channel, Douglas island.
