My 46 yr old brother went into surgery this morning for prostate cancer. That was bad enough. When they were prepping him for the procedure, they found another mass in his abdomen. They said since he was lying down and had lost almost 40 lbs in the months prior to the surgery, it was easier to feel than before. At first they thought it might be an anursym and called in a cardiac surgeon, but it was determined that it wasn't that. He is out of the initial surgery and scheduled for a CT scan later today.

My mom is doing fine so far, my SIL is a basket case.

Prayers please for a good outcome.

Thanks to all.

So sorry to hear this news. Prayers are being said, already had the candles lit for my MIL, so I will quickly add your brother to my devotions. Please keep us posted, and may the outcome be good.

Will do!!! I often think that the looooong wait for the tests and lab results is the most nerve wracking part of this whole cancer journey. Once they have diagnosed that other mass they will most certainly pursue the most aggressive form of treatment. My second lump removal thankfully turned out to be simply a benign mass.

Hugs and many prayers, Mari

Thanks everyone for the great support.

I just came from a visit at the hospital, my brother is feeling good (morphine pumps will do that to you), but is optimistic. The Dr. said the pathology on the lymph nodes came back clean, so no radiation therapy for the prostate cancer. YEA! They are considering letting him go home late on Saturday, keeping fingers crossed.

They are going to wait a couple of weeks for the CT scan, cheaper at the outpatient option than doing it while in the hospital. I guess there is also a spot on his lungs that is also a concern, so they will check that as well. My brother has never been a smoker, and is a postal carrier and youth baseball coach, so he is in fairly good physical condition. We are going to take one day at a time.

My brother and SIL had been their neighborhood newsaper carriers for the past 6 years. They let their customers know that they had given up their routes as of today to deal with this. There was a stack of get-well cards that arrived at their home, at least 20 at last count, many of them with $ gifts to help defray expenses. People can be so caring! Just like all of you!

Thanks again, I'll post more as things progress. It's been a stressful week with this, knowing my son is in Afghanistan AND getting the word that my oldest DD will be deployed to Iraq in January. AY YAY YAY!

Jodee, Thanks for the update. Hope the news will be positive, prayers continuing, for your brother and children. Nice to hear that their neighbors and customers are also being supportive. I am sure that really helps. Hope your brother comes home tomorrow and continues to feel good. Positive thoughts that the needed testing will be accomplished soon and the results will be good. Thanks for keeping us updated.

I'm wishing your whole family health and safety and your brother a swift recovery.

My husband had prostate cancer 2 years ago at the age of 56 and is doing great. Exercise (walking) is the key to a quick recovery after surgery (if the doc okays it).
A messageboard that I found invaluable before, during, and after prostate surgery is <http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=35>

I'm hoping the abdominal mass and the spot on the lung is nothing to worry about. Please keep us informed, and share the pathology report.

Prayers will be there for you and your family. So often too many things go wrong at once. Try to relax as you can. Wishing for strength for you.
