My Boss just informed me( I work in the tv industry in Washington, DC) that if we go to war all vacations are off. My cruise is scheduled to leave February 15th, but I am going a day early on the 14th. I called celebrity and they say there is nothing they could do because that is not one of the excuses you can use to cancel a cruise. I just have to wait it out and hope Georgie doesn't go to early.

Have you considered cruise insurance? It covers cancellations for almost any reason.
We are cruising on the Century in May . I was concerned because my future son-in-law is in the Army Reserves and is coming with us. I spoke with a rep at Access America and was informed it would cover him if his unit went active. The policies are very inexpensive, compared to those offered through the cruise lines. It is based on your age and the cost of your cruise. For a 25 year-old guy on a $750 cruise, we are paying about $35.

Did you buy your insurance from Celebrity, or a third party? We always buy our travel insurance from a third party (ie, Travelex or Travel With Ease). Generally coverage is better, especially if the line goes bankrupt. Even these, however, only cover if you are FIRED from your employer, if you have been employeed for 3 years or more. Vacations cancelled by your employer are not covered in these policies.

I assume war is covered by the insurance if the war breaks out in the area of your cruise, not somewhere in the world.

fwiw ... I work in TV too. but even though we are in a military-laden area, we are not being told our vacations are canceled in case of war. didn't anybody in your shop live through the Gulf War? we made so many coverage plans, strategized the concept of people living at the station around the clock ... then even on day 1, we got to midnight, and said, "well, we've seen the night vision shots, we've told people all about our local troops' and sailors' status, now what?" and went home. Sorry to sound flip for those of you not in the biz - especially those I respect so much who have served to defend our country - but that's what it came down to, and may God rest the souls of those we lost ... anyway, my boss is of the mind that if and when it happens, we cover it the best we can but it's not that much different than any other huge story. Dear God, I hope so. Oh, and btw it matters to me vacation-wise because I am booked on a 3/1 cruise ... leaving the second sweeps are over, 2/26 afternoon.

good luck,
and Godspeed to all in different circumstances ...

That is why I buy Travelex Travel Insurance. You would be covered. The reason you are canceling is because you can't take a vacation because of work. The fact that a war might be the main reason wouldn't come into play. I think it is moot because we won't declare ware before you go and once you leave, I'm sure your phone will suddenly not work well.

Have a great time.

Lots of us are on hold until things are decided about a war. We are unable to make many plans right now because of the situation.

I was afraid that something was going to happen in January before we got back from our Australia/New Zealand cruise.

Hang in there and enjoy the cruise.
