My best friend Anita, her husband Gary and I took a trip this weekend to Illinois. We started out driving highway 270 to Illinois 3, the Great River Road.
This is a memorial where Louis and Clark spent the winter before they started up the Missouri river. Looking across the river is the confluence point of the Mississippi and the Mo. There is a lookout area in the state park directly across the water, and you can also see the Clark Bridge into Alton.
Next we drove thru Alton, and goggled at the victorian homes. Beautiful! And one street sign I loved.

We also toured the quaint town of Elsah, which was a very busy port city in the 1900s. The streets were too narrow to get good shots of the houses, but I loved the city sign.
Next, the lodge at Pere Marquette State Park, and some of the scenery from the lookout point. The ceiling were lined with a marvelous tapestry, full of the area's wildlife.
Next the ferry across the Illinois river, to a peninsula between the MO and the Ill rivers. To the Whitmond Hotel for lunch. It is family dining, one meal only served all day. A real feast! We forgot to take the photos first, so these are of the last time we were there. Same meal! And we still missed the whole plate of the best fried chicken in the state.
More of the Great River Road

And last, at the wildlire refuge at the dam. Missouri pelicans, geese, (funny, the white pelicans were on one side of the island, and the geese all on the other side), and egret and a heron. The heron was wading in the shallows, and fell into a hole. Got up, shook himself and went back to feeding.
