Nasty Comment over a Good HAL Tip!

I think I’m still a little in shock so I’m sharing the story of nasty comments I got today for providing cruise information which I’ve been doing at several sites for over 24 years now! I’m sure there’s no one here that needs reminding to be kind but there are some on the internet in unsuspecting places that should mind their manners or get their facts straight first!
This took place on an otherwise friendly Koningsdam Facebook page where cruisers were asking questions about their upcoming cruises.
There was a general post about the daily itinerary by someone currently onboard the Koningsdam which I had sailed on last week. Later in the thread, a woman went off topic and asked about the saunas onboard to which I made a joking comment about how it was my “secret sauna” as so few knew where they were but I’d share where it was if no one told anyone (haha) and they were free to use. A poster came on raging that she pays good money to use the spa and that I was a hack telling people how to get in for free and unethical at the least and she didn’t want to be paying for the likes of me using it. I bit my tongue and typed that she was being a little rude to accuse me but that it actually was free and where it could be found. I also responded on her later post, telling a woman she had to pay, that this was the wrong information and that for clarification go enjoy the free sauna and cruise. The nasty poster put angry faces on all my posts, said to bless my heart but she was blocking me and reporting me and to HAL to keep the likes of me out of the spa! Another actually piped in that she too didn’t want people like me taking advantage and she hoped other people who read my ‘advertisement’ to use it for free didn't attract more unpaid people crowding it!!
Needless to say, the original poster (OP) suggested that if it was going to get personal he’d remove the posts. And he did, but sadly removing the directions to the spa that I’d provided too. Without lowering to her level in name calling, in my defence and to provide the correct information without soiling the OP’s thread again, my husband actually posted a new thread quoting sources confirming that indeed the saunas were free for the use of HAL passengers and the thread has happily received many thumbs up with a map of the correct directions, sharing my ‘secret sauna’ ever since!
And the moral of the story, if there is one, is to not spoil other people’s holidays before they begin by showing how elitist at least one of their fellow passengers could be before they go and to share any good tips that you can, even if it means more people will join you in the sauna as the fun is there for everyone to enjoy!
The nasty one hasn’t been seen since but I can only imagine she is smouldering at me being correct and thinking there’ll be others enjoying “her” spa. Hopefully, because we provided the correct information and didn’t insult her back, she now understands that what she paid for was the spa services of the company who rents the space on HAL ships which includes the therapy pool, thermal beds and steam room but NOT the sauna exclusively!
Thanks for listening!

To many people want to have it their way now. They also do not read or really listen to an answer or question because they believe they always have the right response. There is no need to be rude on any post just because you believe you are right. I find I post less and less due to the response of others.

It’s quite shocking how people will hide behind their keyboard and write threats instead of asking, ‘do you think your action is appropriate or informing ‘did you know that area has a fee?’ so one can have a chance to explain! You have great stories to tell of your cruise line experience in Alaska, PEB.. sorry you prefer to be quieter!

Seamom..
and that is the reason that I do not do facebook etc. this is the only “social media “ that I use. This site has moderators with brains.

over the years I have found that there are a lot of people that love the fact that they can bully and intimidate people in total anonymity.
plus the ones who love to use the platform to spout half assed theorys.

yes, there are some people that use it to keep in touch with family.
but they would be a lot safer sharing their lives and childrens photos via email.

as I know you well, and know there is no malice in you.. I am sorry that you experienced this.

my advice.. shake it off.. dont drink the poison.

Thanks, Red! I felt safe sharing here as I believe nasties would be yanked off quickly here and in empathy with anyone else who has experienced this. I’m over it as I know I am ethical and that people were pleased to have the correct information as over 55 have given Bob the thumbs up with lots of happy interaction. Sharing the story here was full closure. Carrying on ….

Hi @seamom, It never ceases to amaze me how rude and uninformed people can be at times. This can be amplified on social media, FB groups, and sometimes forums. I administer several FB groups, and some of the people that they attract are in a very different mindset than what we have had here.

We’ve all experienced bumpy times in the past as we adjusted to the new internet world, forgetting warm blooded people were recipients of comments one would never say face to face and thankfully, boundaries were set and truly monitored here. There are a lot of trash talkers still out there who live to be mean but thank goodness people only want to share and help in here.

Would you mind posting your very helpful tip again? I missed it and would truly appreciate what you fully intended to do…help fellow cruisers. We will be cruising in July. Thanks!

Lol… sure! After posting the “secret”, I’m sure it’s more widely known now but there is a sauna which everyone can use despite the argument to the contrary that you need to pay a spa fee. It isn’t even shown on the deck plans that I’ve come across. If on the Koningsdam (I haven’t been on her sister ships but assume the same), enter the spa end of the ship on the Lido deck (9) to the right of the thermal pool and slightly past, take a left and cross over the elevator area to a hallway and you’ll find the ladies’ sauna on the left and the men’s next to it.
It’s a glorious sauna with a full length wide window which never seems to steam so you never miss watching for whales or landscapes. There’s a shower, cold water bucket and towels are provided.
Last year, I had it to myself any day I chose to go… this year, 3 women popped in and we had friendly conversations. A great perk for those who enjoy a bit of pampering without the high cost of the spa.

Well, there you go! Glad I could share so you can enjoy. Just watch out sharing if someone called Barbara is around just in case she’s the nasty one… do you know, I found out later she actually blocked me on the thread so that I couldn’t see that she continued to carry on and complain to call me deceitful for saying passengers could use the one sauna for free?! Bob could see but not me. Eventually days later when pointed out, the admin removed the worst comments but didn’t read thoroughly so there still a few lesser thorns left but I’m okay… She didn’t get any likes so amazingly I do believe I had invisible support from the other posters.

I’m really sorry to hear about your experience with those nasty comments.

Your dedication to helping others with cruise information for over 24 years is admirable, and it's clear you have a passion for sharing valuable tips. It’s unfortunate that some people react poorly, but it's their misunderstanding, not your effort, that is at fault.

Keep up the great work, and remember that the majority of us truly appreciate your insights and kindness!

Thanks so much for your kind remarks, Subham GMC!
And just to clarify should anyone reading my post have misunderstood, this was not on the Cruise Addict website but on a Facebook HAL group started by a Facebook member.
