Never been on a cruise. How do I know what I am being charged for on the ship? going on NCL Sun. Don't really have much money for our trip. Can somebody tell me what to watch for. Is there shampoo and soap, Etc in the bathrooms? Do you pay for soft drinks or just alcohol? Do the y charge for kids activities? I'll be traveling with a 9 year old and a 12 year old. Do you get charged for shore excursion? Can you book those from other then the ship lines? Thanks.

I cant help about the soap or shampoo in cabin.

You pay for soft drinks and alcohol. Prices will vary depending on what you order.

shore excursions are also extra and yes you can book privately. But remember if you run into a delay on a private tour, the ship will not wait for you.

Yes, there will be soap and shampoo in your cabins bathroom.

Food in many restaurants are free, but not at all the restaurants. Water, ice tea, coffee, juices, and milk are free. Sodas, beer, wine and alcoholic drinks are not free.
You can go ashore at the Alaskan ports free. Booking a tour guide, hiring a shore excursion are not.

Here is the answer to most of your questions, of course others have answered as well:

There are several places where your food in included, the main dining rooms, the buffet, Pacific Heights which is a healthy choice option and Sports bar just to mention a few. You can choose to spend extra for the sur charge dining rooms but probably more people don't than do.

Yes, you have to pay for soda but you can bring in on board which is a great way to save.

No, generally there is no charge for the kids program, which btw is one of the best at sea. You should tip the kids kamp staff at the end of the cruise as they are not part of the tipping pool

Excursions can be very pricey. I would suggest when in port you go ashore and locate local tour guides that are much cheaper and often more interesting. Sometimes you can just walk around town, have a great time, stop at a tavern or someplace and enjoy your day without even doing tours. I wouldn't suggest you do the whole cruise without a couple of excursions.

Shampoo and soap dispensers are available in the bathrooms. There will be lotion as well.

Hope this helps you a little.

When I have cruised in the past, we brought on our own drinks, water, beer, etc...is this still ok or do they check your bags like on the airlines?

you can bring soda and water but no more beer. Almost all lines are cracking down on this. I would suggest you bring only a couple of bottles of water as they can be a real pain in the you know what. The ships water is very good. We bring 2 or 3 bottles and just keep re-filling them.

You have received several answers. So I'll provide a different way of looking at it. If you are asked for your room key card, then they are going to charge you.

The main issue will be the restaurants, where you incur the charge before they ask for your room key. Some restaurants are free, others cost extra. Make sure you ask up front (either when you make the reservation, for those restaurants that take reservations, or at the door when you walk up). Otherwise you will only be charged when asked for your room key, and you will be asked for the room key before you incur the charge.

Also you will find a service charge on your account of $10 per day per person. Since you pay this service charge, you do not have to tip. You can tip extra if you want (and the service deserves an extra tip).
