Need a hotel in San Juan

We are on the September 19th sailing of the Golden Princess to the Southern Caribbean. We are flying into San Juan on September 18th. Can anyone recommend a decent, inexpensive hotel near the pier?

The Wyndham Old San Juan Hotel & Casino (Not the El San Juan Hotel & Casino), is right across the street from the pier. It's definitely decent, but not great... the service is usually lousy. Not really inexpensive (nothing in San Juan is really inexpensive) I think around $140. We usually stay on Condado... much more enjoyable... if you book in advance, you can probably get a similar rate at the Marriott... their web site has a rate of $139 right now and it's a fabulous hotel in a great location. You'd have to take a cab to the ship, but it's about a 10 minute ride. First find out if the Golden will be at the pier... it may be docked on the other side of the channel. If it's at the pier, it may be worth staying in Old San Juan because you can walk over, but if it's across the channel, you'd have to take a taxi anyway... if that's the case, stay on Condado.

The Golden now leaves from the Pan American pier, rahter than the pier in Old Town.

We stayed at the Caribe Hilton. Used Priceline, bid $75 and Caribe Hilton was the hotel that accepted the bid.

Agree with Peabody. Try Priceline. We did and got the Wyndham Condado for $100.:USA:AL

For those who've used Priceline and posted the rates they received, what months were/are you cruising? Just wondering if any of those great rates are for high season? Thanks!

I cruised May 9th of this year. Used Priceline. Read the materials at biddingforfun.com and went to all the actual hotel websites to check prices there, so I would know about where to start the bidding at. The lowest was the Caribe Hilton at around $130. So, I bid $75. I figured since the Hilton was the lowest, that would probably be the hotel we got and it was. I only nid in the Resort category.

Wow, you got a great price for the Caribe Hilton! I'm thinking if I do this, bidding under th Resort category is the way to go. Thanks again!

Used Priceline for 7/11/04 post-cruise. Got the Wyndham in Old San Juan for $65. Becareful tho! They have a restaurant on premises that they recommend. Lunch was $25pp and toast was $9.00pp! We found a Micky D's!

Becky brings up another subject entirely! That price for food is totally unreasonable! I have reservations at the Old San Juan Wyndham and may cancel because of the unreasonable food prices. Are there restaurants near the Wyndham Condado? Does anyone know if the food is more reasonable there?
Thanks

Jan, I wouldn't cancel a good price at that hotel based on food costs! I know there's a Senior Frogs near the hotel and it's in the Old Town, so there's lots of other restaurants nearby. The last time we stayed in San Juan we were in the Condado area and food prices weren't cheap there either. I can't recall just how expensive it was, but we paid a fortune for dinner and breakfast at our hotel in Condado. I'd just go with a good area and good hotel rate because I suspect food in the hotels will be high regardless of where you go. :)

Since I've gone to Atlantis in the Bahamas a few times in the last few years, the food prices at San Juan hotels seem perfectly within reason to me...LOL. At Atlantis, the breakfast buffet is $20 and dinner buffet $40.

At the Caribe Hilton, breakfast under $10 (breakfast buffet was slightly more) and dinner between $15 and $30...plus a fajita bar on some nights. The food was pretty good, too.
