We will be cruising on the Diamond Princess next May. I need recommendations on travel from Whittier to Anchorage. We are considering flying home the next morning. Is Anchorage a hard city to get around ? Any advise would be appreciated. Miss Honey

The easy way is to take the bus or rail transfers offered by Princess. Both drop you in downtown Anchorage, where there is lots to do for the afternoon/evening you have left. Many of the downtown hotels have airport transfers for the next morning - if not, a cab is about $20.

It's an easy drive but an expensive one. I've heard that the drop fee for a one-way Whittier-Anchorage is $250.

I checked prices on the web for car rental. Rental for 24 hrs was around $100. It didn't say anything about a drop off fee. I will try to call a rental company tonight and see about any add-ons. Thanks Yukon. Miss Honey

I will check this out. I called Avis today and a midsize car will be $205. to pick up in Whittier and return in Anchorage. The train is $99 per person. I haven't checked the bus rates yet. Miss Honey

The motor coach ride to anchorage is $55 each. It will be a hour and a half ride. The train is $100 per person and takes two and one half hours to complete. The train is more relaxing and more of a sightseeing trip, although much of the route to Anchorage, follows the highway. The train and the motor traffic use the same tunnel out of Whittier, and alternate using the right of way, on the half hour.
