New crew uniforms

When Zuiderdam debuts soon, the crew will be sporting new uniforms. It has been fifteen years since there has been a uniform change. I sure hope they don't change the "doorman's" Philip Morris style uniform. He is such a signature that many of us really love.

That door guy is the one that gets a little something on tip night from me simply because he remembers my name after the first meeting on boarding day. I can't imagine how they accomplish this with so many guests on board.

I love the "yum-yum boy" on every HAL ship. They are so darling!!! And it is incredible how they remember so many names....cruise after cruise after cruise. Come back six months later, and more often than not he'll still remember you.

I was glad to read that there will be new uniforms for HAL crew. That's the one thing I've never cared for - particularly the dining room staff I think they look like movie theater ushers instead of waiters. It will be interesting to see the new one on Zuiderdam Feb. 1.

I LOVE those dining room uniforms...the red and blue jackets....to us it is such a signature of HAL. For all the years; all the very many cruises. When we pull up to a ship and see the stewards outside at the telephones wearing their jackets.....well, to us it means "we've come home".

I will definitely miss seeing those jackets because of their individuality. They don't look like every other ship's uniform. Any uninimaginative, no talent can put a waiter in black tux, pants, white shirt and black jacket. I'm sure you realize they represent the colors of the Dutch flag.

Ooops, didn't mean to upset anyone, but I do prefer the Tux-type uniforms in the dining room. I, too hope they don't do away with the doorman and his pillbox, that is truly a signature - we love watching him approach with the dinner chimes.

What on earth is "uninimaginative"?
Not in my Funk & Wagnall.
Is it perhaps e-mail speech, too?

"wildrose"....I, so humbly, apologize for once again being guilty of a creative "typo"....I wouldn't guarantee I won't create another one in this message I am currently typing.

But.....I suspect you probably got the gist of my message???? :lol

If the title "typo queen" had not already been claimed by one of our wonderful @ddicts, I would surely wear that title.

Sail7 - Have you seen the new uniforms? If so, what did you think about them?

Sue

PS - welcome back - it was a bit quiet without you.

I have not seen them, Sue....but they have been described to me. It makes me very sad to know the red and blue jackets will be no more.......they have great sentimentality for us. It may seem silly to folks who are new to HAL....but to those of us who have been hanging around HAL for so long, they represent many memories....many dear dining stewards who have taken such wonderful care of us. Friends!

(When we left Amsterdam, our very professional dining steward who took care of us so well for fourteen nights, impulsively put out his arms to hug me goodbye. This has happened far more times than I can count. And the best is....we very often see these dear guys again and again.)

I was joshing with him on Amsterdam and he pledged to mail me his current jacket when they reoutfit him. He, too, seemed sad to think of them changing.

But IMO...the good news is that they are not reverting to "same as everyone else" black tux pants and white shirts/black bow ties.......

Thanks for the welcome back. We had a great time but are glad to be home. Seems we were gone a long time.

Maybe you could mount the old waiter's uniform in a shadow box, surrounded by some other cruise memorabilia? (No, I'm not being sarcastic.) I think it would make a nice memoir.

BTW - don't worrie abowt youre typping errers-I do et al the tyme. :grin
