New Cruiser - Formal Night Dress Question

I will be going on my first cruise on the Diamond Princess next month and I am worried about if what I want to wear for formal nights will be okay. I do not like to dress up, so I do not own any outfits that can be considered "formal". I also don't own any dresses (I haven't worn one since I have been about 10). I am a larger women, so finding clothing that fits is sometimes very difficult.

A friend who has been on many cruises has told me that on formal night I will see anything from very formal (evening gowns) to nice career or church clothing.

I work in a business office and usually dress "business casual" for work. However, I have a pair of black slacks and several satiny blouses that I wear to work when I want to appear more dressy (such as when giving presentations or attending important meetings). My friend thinks this will be acceptable for the cruise, but I wanted to get some opinions here too.

The blouses are long-sleeve, button-down, and collared in a shiny satin-like material. I have one in red and one in green. The pants are typical women's business-like black slacks. The outfit definitely isn't "formal", but is very nice. I was thinking of dressing it up with some nice jewelry and a fancy belt and wearing a nice pair of dressy flat shoes (I can't wear heals due to foot problems).

So my question is, would this outfit be "good enough to get by" without standing out like a sore thumb? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds nice. Maybe add a shimmery type shall to it too.

I'm disabled and sometimes I dress this way while in my chair (dresses tend to get caught in the wheels). I also wear flat shoes. I bought some at payless that I added sparkle gel to and it dressed them up. I made it look like a little diamond. I got comments on my shoes which of course people see with me.

I don't think you need to worry about what you are wearing as long as it is something like you'd wear to a wedding. We have been on several cruises and seen slacks and very dressy stuff. I personally think that the fancy gowns and tuxes are a little much, but thats just my opinion .

Have fun!

Katier,

I think the outfit you described sounds fine. If you are on a 7 night cruise, there will be 2 formal nights, just in case you didnt know that. I dont care to dress up much either so I understand your feelings. Your friend is right, there will be a mix of attire on those evenings, some more formal than others.

By the way, =welcome to the boards! Hope you have a wonderful first cruise!

I think your outfit will be fine. Some of the boards have people who are VERY concerned with what everyone else is wearing but we've always found a wide range of attire on formal nights so don't let them scare you off! If you want to avoid dressing up on any of the formal nights you can always order from the dining room menu for room service. We aren't big fans of formal nights so the opportunity to have the same menu served on our balcony is very nice.

I just got off the CP today 6/19/2004. On formal night I saw people in shorts. I known that you are not suppose to be allowed in the dinning room in shorts. But just about every night we saw some one in shorts or jeans anyway. You will be fine. Have a great cruise. Just relax and enjoy your time as one week will seem like one day!
