We just booked a fantastic cruise deal from New Orleans over the Christmas holidays on Grandeur. Having sailed on her sister ship we are looking forward to a wonderful time. However, we have never sailed from New Orleans and are looking for information as to the location of the port, compared to the airport and downtown/French Quarter. Perhaps some places to stay. We plan on flying in the day before to see some of New Orleans but are curious about if we could make an 11:40 am flight back home on the day we dock (Sat, 12/30). Anyone have experience with the time to the airport from the pier? Please let us know.

First of all, I would NEVER book an 11:40 return flight. Too much to chance getting off the ship and to the airport.

I have some friends who stayed at Embassy Suites very near the port and they said it was great.

Here is a link to cruise info on the Port of New Orleans.

The port is right near the French Quarter...near a very nice shopping "mall". The French Quarter is about 25-35 minutes from the airport(depending on traffic). A flight at 11:45, might be cutting it pretty close..leaves no room for unforseen circumstances.
We have stayed at the Marriott, the Fairmont, Hotel Monteleone, Omni Royal Orleans, and the Intercontinental. They are all in the French Quarter, or right outside on/near Canal Street. And they were all very nice!
If you have never been to N.O...you must go to Cafe DuMonde for the wonderful coffee(very strong with chicory in it) and Benyetes(sp), which are puffy donut type pastries...yum!!
Gumbo Shop is the place to go for some traditional New Orleans food. We love Petunia's for breakfast(I think its on St. Louis, near Royal). Other nice restaurants are Court of Two Sisters (Jazz brunch), Muriels, Emerils, Redfish,...and too many others to name. The food in N.O. is fabulous! I am already jealous...it's one of my favorite places. Have a great time!
