I just returned this morning from the Carnival Elation, which made a port call at Nassau. I have been to this port many times and I was surprised to hear the following report from someone who shared our dining table:
They reported that they asked the cruise director staff where they can go to snorkel on their own at a nice beach and the response was to take a taxi to th e Radisson at Cable Beach and just walk through the hotel to get to the beach and the beach is free.
That part sounded correct to me, because I had previously read that if you wanted to use their lounge chairs you may have to pay, but the beach was public and therefore free to use.
However, this family reported that the Radisson security guard/employee told them that they MUST pay $10 per person to step foot on the beach in front of the Radisson. He claimed that all of the hotels (including the Radisson) had recently leased (from the Bahamas government) the land that makes up the beach area so they effectively owned it and could charge for it.
This family was not happy and could not afford to pay that amount, so they paid the taxi to drive them back to the pier and didn’t end up going to the beach at all.
I was surprised to hear about this and since it was second-hand, I cannot say for sure that it is accurate, but I wanted to alert everyone to this possible change in policy /scam that is taking place and I hope it spurs some discussion as to the accuracy of this information.
