Beginning January 2009 there will be a service charge of $3.95 for room service ordered between 12-5am, this includes the gratuity.

::eek: Please tell me it's April Fool's Day!!! That's horrible news! The only thought I have is that maybe drunk guests order room service and don't tip the crew and are rowdy in the process.

I am afraid its true!1 They are trying to find ways of generating revenues!!

It may be a way to generate revenue, but I would wager it has more to do with the passengers stiffing the room service crew.

At least this is a charge I can live with. I make the choice whether or not to call room service or not. I'd rather have that additional charge than see the general price go up. Besides, doesn't some of the staff seem to be on call 24/7?

How many people are ordering room service between midnight and five in the morning?

I would guess it has something to do with kids ordering room service all hours and wasting food and the time of the waitstaff.
I sure have no problem with it--I can't imagine eating dinner ( we always eat late ) and then turning around at 1-2 a.m and eating again ! =huh

While I hate to see "nickel and diming" as much as anyone, I'll come to the defense of Royal Caribbean on this one.

I was recently in a meeting with an executive from Royal Caribbean who mentioned that this surcharge was going to be implemented. The reason is much the same as when they implemented the surcharge for Johnny Rockets, namely wasted food. There has been a high instance during the 12 a.m to 5 a.m time frame of people coming in from an evening of cocktails in the lounges, then ordering room service, then falling asleep. When the room service arrives, nobody answers the door and the food is wasted. By implementing the surcharge, Royal Caribbean feels that is enough of an incentive for people to stay awake until room service arrives.

I'd tip at least that much anyway so it doesn't really bother me.

You can be sure if there is not too much of a protest, they will make it for 24 hours service.

Earl, Earl, Earl, me boy--- me thinks you have a twin --there's a fellow on another site that goes by Earl who is going on RCCL in Feb. and has posted about RCCL rebating back to him $ 1200.00 from the original cost of his cruise---
Now why would RCCL be trying to be sneaky and nickel and dime everyone--maybe to make up for that $ 1200.00 rebate ??? =huh =huh :lol :lol :lol

"IF" this new charge is in fact true how many people REALLY belive it will not be extended to ALL room service orders in the not to distant future... yeah... that's what I thought...guess I will just book a cabin closer to the windjammer... call me cheap..but I'm not paying an extra $4 for my morning coffee...

Yes thats me and I am on 4 cruises sites. One as nothing to do with the other. probably because the

cruise was not selling. so they lower the price of the cruise.

No problem here, eating all day is enough.....I agree, that privilege has been abused, and the tipping thing, don't get me started.....the staff mostly works for peanuts, and I am often embarassed by my fellow cruisers, the appropriate tip has been welcome and my cruising experiences enhanced !! Cannot wait to embark !! 2-2-09 Granduer....=docdance

I can understand where they are coming from. For me, I'll just make sure I place my order for warm cookies and ice cold milk by 11pm. What a wonderful way to end a day at sea...
