I think Celebrity has made the correct decision on the smoking policy. :thumb

Next it will be no drinking, since it might promote alcoholism, then no perfume, due to all the allergies on board, then no dancing, due to lawsuits from falling. I am not a fan of legislating behavior.

Give me one good reason someone with a veranda shouldn't be able to smoke outside.

Give me one good reason why they can't have make half the lounges smoking.

People have smoking for hundreds of years....babies were born to smoking mothers, grew up just fine, and had more babies. No one is going to die from a fellow passenger smoking 20 feet away. Second hand smoke danger is something that one must be subjected to over an extended period of time, like living with a chain smoker. You do more damage to your lungs inhaling your neighbor's fireplace smoke in the winter time who is burning treated wood, and the fumes blow all over the neighborhood.

Just another example of what an intolerant society we've become.

I am a considerate smoker, have no issues being "banned" from dining areas, etc. But a BAR? Gimme a break. A private OUTSIDE veranda? Again, gimme a break. We're all so "health conscious" that we rant over smokers, and then consume thousands of chemicals every day in our food, water and air. Ignorance reins.

The fire on board Princess two years ago might be one good reason. Another might be the fact that the majority
of passengers do not smoke and do not want to occupy rooms that have the remnants of smoke. And, as the dialong
hear shows, smoke wafting from one balcony to another does occur and is objectionable to some.

I wish X had just set aside some rooms for smokers that were away from those who object, or vice versa. It would
have achieved the same objective without causing such commotion.

Having said that, I really think the implication that anyone who objects to smokers is ignorant speaks for itself.

I agree completely. That was my point. Don't dictate people's personal rights and behavior. Create an atmosphere where everyone can do as they wish without imposing on other's beliefs. Guess your idea just made too much sense to be enacted.

hi all,
i think maybe they should let people smoke only on balconys of the ship . If people are so against smoking wait till all the closet smoking pile into those few places lol.... But i do agree no smoking in the rooms they are just to small and leave a smoke smell. and if they were really smart they would charge a fee on top of room if you smoke and that would make them more money . also just my opinion maybe ban booze they seem to be the ones who break things and 4 some reason always fall of the ship.. lol... have never heard of anyone smoking a cig and then saying i think i will jump overboard.. just a thought lol..

Actually, there IS a "cleaning charge" = spraying some Febreeze in the room, if you smoke in your cabin. HOWEVER....they can also, depending on the hotel manager's mood, disembark you at your own expense in a foreign country, and you will be out the entire cost of the cruise and on your own to get home. Read the new passenger contracts.

Thanks anyway Celebrity!! So glad I you rewarded my Elite Status by banning smoking on my veranda. I'm booked on Oceania and Princess this year. And I know for a fact many other Celeb's have cancelled due to the new policy. Since many Europeans are smokers, and the American dollar is so weak, Americans are cancelling cruises right and left due to the economy, I sure hope the Canadians can fill your ships!

I have little doubt if Celebrity was an independently owned corporation, this would not have occurred. But RCCL, being such a high class, "customer service" line...(yes, I'm being sarcastic) makes the corporate rules. Don't ya just love corporations?

Wow I just read the post I will be switching to try a Celebrity cruise from Carnival and Princess. The free smoking everywhere leaves me breathless by the end of an eight day cruise so this is good news. There is nothing like a smoker (worse a cigar smoker) on a balcony next to you wwhile your trying to wine and dine you partner. Great news!!

Well, you're a young and new cruiser. If you loved Carnival, you might have to step up your wardrobe a bit if you indeed to book Celebrity. If you can afford it. The brochure rates (I took several brochures for 08/09 when I was on board Constellation in Jan) are historically known to be about 2x what you will actually pay. Imagine my shock to find the brochure rate is actually 50% of what they are charging for the 08/09 cruises. The rates skyrocketed.

If any of you out there have a hard copy brochure, try to book the same cruise at celebrity.com and see the enormous price increase. I would think they have to honor their brochure price, but guess not! Cie la vie. In my humble opinion, RCCL has made some grave errors with their long term marketing strategeis. Cruise lines come and go....Celebrity may fall from grace in the next decade. Glad I got to sail them when they were the best

RLAEKEMAN,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But, do not be put off by the previous poster's comment about
your wardrobe needing to be upgraded coming from Carnival to Celebrity. For nearly all of your
cruise, except dinner in the main dining room, acceptable cruise wear on Celebrity is nearly identical
to what you find on Carnival. At dinner, however, Celebrity does (usually) enforce a dress code for
the main dining room and you will not see shorts, collarless shirts, flip flops, etc there. And, on formal
nights, the overwhelming majority of men will have on a suit or tux, with women being dressed in a
variety of dressy outfits. Celebrity does have a casual dining alternative at night if any of that bothers
you. Again, however, day time wardrobes are very, very casual with shorts and tees prevailing (except
in Alsaka, of course).

So, do not be put off by the comments of others that might lead you to conclude that everyone is sitting
arounf the pool on a Celebrity ship attired in tuxes. Ain't so!

Ted, that translates EXACTLY into what I said..."you may have to step up your wardrobe a bit".....Who said anything about people sitting around in tuxes? LOL First you say, you don't need to upgrade, and then you go on to explain (in detail) that you do. A very confusing post Ted.

ah!!! smoking and dress all in one thread. The two subjects that stir up our emotions more than anything else it seems.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that is all that we are asking for here.
There is no need to go beyond that please.
Heck I'll bet some folks even think I might have been wrong once or twice. Let me know in a pm if you think it's that important to correct me. Here you should just be talking about what you know and believe to be true.... do not make it personal between yourself and others.

or...........If in doubt of your ground work check here.

I am a smoker but my husband is not. I have always preferred Celebrity, and had planned to sail on Solstice but because of the no smoking on balcony, I cancelled that cruise and booked HAL's Eurodam. If they do the same thing, then I will find another cruiseline, if they all do it then I guess cruising days for us are over. My husband HATES smoke, but he says it doesn't bother him at all on the balcony, and can't understand why people complain about people smoking on their balcony..

Wow, Jeannie that's exactly what happened to me. What really upset me, was BEFORE booking another Celeb, after hearing "rumors" of them banning smoking in cabins, I called the Captains' Club (not regular guest services) and spoke to a supervisor who assured me there would be NO CHANGES in 2008 to the policy. I was really perturbed (I think I made that obvious already - ha) to find them whip out a press announcement to the general public with the new ban without informing booked customers.
:X
I too cancelled and then really did research, since I no longer felt I could trust the cruiselines' spokespeople. I took down names! (laugh). Princess guaranteed me in writing there would be no changes to their policy at least through 2008 and for the foreseeable future. (I think the current policies are just fine - they favor non smokers by far). By the way, like your husband, I also hate smoke filled rooms, despite being a smoker. I always air out my home and car and use Febreeze. Only die hard - 3 pack a day - chain smokers I think, are immune to the stench of thick smoke. There is plenty of technology for "air cleaner" vents and a/c units available, that would make bars, casinos and lounges livable for all.

Anyway, I booked the new Princess ship Ruby in December. My parents and I were doing HAL since 1976. They stayed with them, when I "jumped ship" to Celebrity, as I found HAL's quality continually lowering over the years, while the average age group continued to climb (I'm 47). Finally about 5 years ago, my parents (who sailed each new ship and averaged 3 HAL cruises per year) said they were disgusted by the new standards on HAL, "in your face" marketing, and upselling and simply stopped cruising. I believe my dad's exact words were "I won't be caught dead again waiting in a long line for dining while photographs line the walls and crew try to sell you everything. You can't get anywhere on the ship without being forced to pass some kind of sales pitch". (i.e. spa treatments, specialty restaurants, future cruises, photos, etc.)

Like yourself, if I find Princess isn't up to my standards, I'll (gasp!) end a 30 year cruising jaunt in favor of other types of vacations, where no one tells me what I can and cannot do (within reason of course). :pThe whole point of a vacation is just that - to do as you PLEASE.

For both our sakes, I hope it doesn't come to that. Nothing beats being on the ocean. A true escape.

However the person in the next cabin goes out to enjoy his balcony and cannot because he can smell the smoke from you, and to top it off because of the wind his cabin also fills with smoke.

When I go on my veranda for some quiet and privacy and there are people next door talking loudly, I go inside and wait until later. Or if the people next door seem to want some privacy, I go inside for a bit. Amazing, what a little courtesy and consideration can do when we all work together, instead of ranting and complaining.:)P)
