Northbound versus Southbound

It's a personal preference thing...

I strongly prefer Southbound...
Since I start with a Cruisetour, doing the land portion first means I start with all the getting on and off trains and buses, checking into a different hotel every night, eating in restaurants...all the difficult stuff...First...

Then, after a week of tooling around Alaska...whn I am good and tired, I get to board the ship...unpack for basically the last time, start eating those magnificent meals...and really get pampered...and relax...

My flight THERE is the long one...but I can deal with it easily, knowing what I have to look forward to...
And then, at the end, when I am tired out and looking to get home, I get the short flight...

If you are doing a cruisetour go southbound. You will be very busy on the land part of the trip and can rest on the cruise back.

If you are doing a cruise only go northbound. The scenery just gets better and better as you go north.

If you are like me go both ways and save on airfare LOL.

It is true, that the scenery gets better as you go north, and that's why i prefer Northbound, even when we do a cruisetour. What could be more spectacular than the view of Mt. McKinley from the dining room at Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge? But then, there's Mt. McKinley as seen from the skiplane landing on Ruth Glacier. It's all phenomenal!

I've done northbound twice and southbound once (cruise only on all 3), and I prefer northbound. As others have noted the scenery just gets more spectacular as you head north. Southbound is gorgeous as well; however, I prefer northbound. I like sailing out of the Port of Vancouver and the leisurely first day cruising the Inside Passage. It's a nice laid-back day where I've gotten to know the ship and my fellow passengers before we hit ports and the wonders of the glaciers.

Only drawback to northbound for me is the long, long flight back to Tampa Bay from Anchorage.

Either direction an Alaskan cruise is hard to beat! :)
