Has anyone had the experience of viewing the Northern Lights on a cruise ship? Is it worth getting up in the middle of the night to view? I have not done the research yet, but does anyone know what month is best for viewing?

If you go in May, and travel out of Anchorage, you may have a chance to see them.

I'm in northern(ish) Canada and we see the northern lights almost year round. They are usually brighter in spring and fall, but it really just depends on a lot of things.

The later in the year you go the better as far as Northern Lights viewing goes. You won't see any in May because it doesn't get dark enough, but by mid-August you have some chance. The chances are much better by September, but that's also the rainy season, so the clear skies you need aren't common. Is it worth getting up for? That's putting it mildly - a good display is something you'll never forget. See some of the photo albums linked from http://explorenorth.com/aurora.html
