I was on the 6/15 sailing of the Dawn. We did not pull out of NY harbor because on the ship's return the week earlier there was a sick child that had to be taken off in Florida. Hey, things happen. Open bar was what they gave us for the delay. We got on at about 6:30 p.m. and went directly to dinner at Impressions. Dinner was wonderful. We then met some people at the Internet cafe that we met on line (cruisecritic). Then went to see another friend in her suite. Next day took the bus to Magic Kingdom, only had four hours there due to the late arrival. But I had to go never being there before. Had a blast. We took the NCL bus there and it was great. We had dinner at Aqua (our fav), Venetian, Cagneys (wonderful, my husband had a 24 oz porterhouse - 17.50). Things that are a must:

Do not miss:

Pam a the piano bar at Gatsby's
the poolside barbecue
ice cream at the pool
fruit bowl - a wonderful drink with rum, triple sec and fruit juice
salsa
the full length beach chair in the jacuzzi in the spa - you must go to the spa and sit in the chairs that face the back of the boat for a wonderful rest

We took the Discover Atlantis tour which was very interesting. Did not get off in Miami or the private Island. I will be happy to answer any other ?'s you may have.

Maltesemom,
You mentioned that you didn't get off the ship in Miami or Great Stirrup Cay and I'm wondering if the ship was considerably less crowded while in those ports and also what made you decide to stay onboard instead. We are not especially interested in Miami, but since we've never been there, we thought we should at least take a short, less expensive tour just so we could take some pictures and say we'd been there. We're not sure how long we'll stay on the private island b/c although we love the beach, we're very fair skinned and can't take too much Caribbean sun. Besides, we can hang out at the beach at home. But this brings up another question ... Can you get on and off the boat at your leisure the entire time you're in port? And regarding crowds, did you find the ship crowded when not in port? And finally a question about Port Canaveral ... Were you glad that you booked this excursion through the ship or do you regret going that route? We are planning to go to Universal Studios (I think -- tough decision among the parks). Someone else mentioned that although the ship doesn't leave port until 10pm and in November the parks are generally open until 7pm, the bus back to the ship picks up at 5pm. I'd rather stay until park closing. I assume if we booked our own transportation that we could leave later. What do you think? Do you know anyone who has done this? We've never been to any of the parks but we're assuming with lines and possible late arrival that we'll need more than a few hours to see everything at least once.

Thanks for the info!:)

The ship is definitely less crowded when in port, which makes time at the pool wonderful. We did not get off in Miami because we only had four hours in Disney (port canaveral) and we were exhausted from running around. so we decided to stay on board and take advantage of quiet time at the pool. If you have never been to Miami I think you should just take the South Beach shuttle and go somewhere for Lunch. They say its a very artsy deco kind of place with lots of eateries and shopping. You can also go to Gloria Estefan's restaurant for lunch, altho i am not sure of the name. When in port you can come and go on and off the boat as you please. We did not get off on the private island because the first tender (they do not dock on the island you have to go by smaller boat) left at 7 a.m. and my husband works nights so its a little hard for him to get up that early. They had boats every few minutes back and forth all day but at 9 a.m. they announced that there were over 1,000 people on the island so again we just decided to chill out. We really love being on the sea. We only booked the bus to Disney once there for the Magic Kingdom we were on our own. I am told by a friend of mine that if you have never been to any of the parks you should start with the Magic Kingdom (she has been there 37 times). If you arrange your own travel make sure you find out how much it is because we were told if you miss the bus it costs 80.00 to get back to the ship. So you need to figure out which is best for you. They do make you leave the parks earlier tho. If you have any other questions please feel free to email me.

Thanks, MALTESEMOM, for all of the tips for the DAWN...

SHIPLOOKOUT and I haven't traveled to Florida or the Bahamas before and are looking forward to our first NCL cruise - and we will be carrying your tips along!

If you think of anything else we should know as newbies we'd love to hear more... or from anyone going September 14th, too.

-Love

I was also on the June 15 th sailing. We did not get on board unitl around 8:15 or so but once on board we were very happy with the cruise.
Since we needed two cabins for our family we also booked an inside guarantee
and ened up on deck 8 aft.
Since we arrived in Port Canaveral at noon and their were four of us, it would have been a costly excursion for our family so we decided to stay on board and enjoy the uncrowed pool deck. We could have taken the shuttle or a taxi to Cocoa Beach which is nearby , but opted to stay out of the sun and relax.
Like you, we had never been to Miami and wanted to look aroun, My husband was still recovering from too much sun and not enough sunblock so instead of going to South beach we took the NCL Miami overview tour. The air conditioned bus went up by south beach and then looped back into MIami f or tours of Coral Gables, Calle Ocho, a ride by the Venetian pool and then back to the ship. We were travelling with teens who were more interested in shopping so we then cabbed it over to the Bayside Mall which was an a mile or so away from the ship. Cab fare awas six dollars each way for the four of us.
For those inclined to go to South Beach ans shop and sun there, NCL runs a shuttle bus which costs 15/pp
Now about the private island. My teens chose not to get off the ship but my husband and myself had a quick breakfast and caught the first tender out. It was once of the most memorable days of our trip. We snagged a chair with an umbrella and hopped right into the water. NCL provided snorkel vests and we had brought our own masks and fins
It was so nice at the island that I would have enjoyred another day there. I rented a float and observed all kinds of tropical fish and sting rays in the water.
When we were through swimming we caugth a tender back to the ship and had a late lunch in the Garden Cafe. The beach did get crowded as the day went on but it was not a problem for us..hey the good beaches at home get just as crowded in the summer months.
You asked about the GTY cabin. We booked two inside Gty cabins and were upgraded from N to J on both ending up about ten cabins apart on deck 8 aft.
The cabins were very nice and although small met our needs well. The cabins on the Majesty are smaller, so we were happy . I would have liked an outside or balcony but we couldn't budget for it on this trip and still book two seperate cabins.
Once you get away from the immediate pool area there is plenty of deck space for lounging . On deck 12 forward near the Stardust Theater there is a "Reading and Writing " room and game room where you can hang out with beautiful views all around
Plenty of people were in those rooms reading, playing board games when we walked by
We loved Le Bistro and the Venetian dining room. Our teens liked the convenience of the
Blue lagoon for fish and chips and had no problem using their soda cards anywhere on the ship.
I hope that you enjoy your cruise as much as we did.

I am taking the dawn in november with my daughter and 3 grandchildren, who want to see disney world. How long was the bus ride and do you recommend renting a car rather than the bus to have more time at disney. My grandchildren are 3,5 and 8.

karjames,
If you don't mind me asking, are you bringing children? Are you bringing a spouse? What age or age range are you in? Just curious if there's anyone else from this board cruising that's similar to us. My husband and I are cruising the Dawn on the 2nd. We're 32 and 33, and it's our first cruise. We're also from MD. No kids yet.

Yes, My husband and I are booked on the cruise with our two children. This is the first time we are going on a cruise with the kids, have cruised before though. What deck are you on? We are from NJ. I have never cruised Norwegian before but have been on Royal Carribean. You should love it.
We are on deck 11 in a Mini suite.

karjames,
We are from Harford County. Our cabin is on deck 8 -- outside but no balcony. I've had a hellish week -- just diagnosed with Grave's Disease (hyperthyroid) -- so I'm not 100% positive we're going to be able to go on this cruise. My doctor seems to think we can, but I'm concerned about interaction between the Bonine I got for the cruise and the meds I'm being prescribed, not to mention being on brand new meds with a condition that's new to me. If I'm not feeling "normal" by then, I don't want to go. But I'm hoping we can go and have a good time. Either way, thank God for trip insurance!!

Fuzzlekins,
I'm sorry to hear that you have Graves disease because my mother has Graves disease. Once she started on her medication (Radioactive Iodine I think), she felt 100% times better within days and she was back to normal in less than a month! She went off the meds after about a year and a half. I think that you should definitely go on the cruise, it will be such a nice relaxing time and you deserve it!

blu816305,
Thanks for the info and your support! I go for my radioactive iodine uptake test tomorrow and Tuesday. I should be starting on the thyroid medication by Wednesday. That doesn't leave me a lot of time to get used to the medication before my 11/2 cruise. My main concern is developing side effects while on the cruise -- my doctor says that they happen within the first month. My mother also has Graves Disease, so I at least have someone here who understands and can help me through. But she's on a different medication, so I'm still concerned about that aspect. Cross your fingers for me! Since this is our first cruise, I really want it to be a good one.

-Jenn
