The ship is definitely less crowded when in port, which makes time at the pool wonderful.  We did not get off in Miami because we only had four hours in Disney (port canaveral) and we were exhausted from running around.  so we decided to stay on board and take advantage of quiet time at the pool.  If you have never been to Miami I think you should just take the South Beach shuttle and go somewhere for Lunch.  They say its a very artsy deco kind of place with lots of eateries and shopping.  You can also go to Gloria Estefan's restaurant for lunch, altho i am not sure of the name.  When in port you can come and go on and off the boat as you please.  We did not get off on the private island because the first tender (they do not dock on the island you have to go by smaller boat) left at 7 a.m. and my husband works nights so its a little hard for him to get up that early.  They had boats every few minutes back and forth all day but at 9 a.m. they announced that there were over 1,000 people on the island so again we just decided to chill out.  We really love being on the sea.  We only booked the bus to Disney once there for the Magic Kingdom we were on our own.  I am told by a friend of mine that if you have never been to any of the parks you should start with the Magic Kingdom (she has been there 37 times).  If you arrange your own travel make sure you find out how much it is because we were told if you miss the bus it costs 80.00 to get back to the ship.  So you need to figure out which is best for you.  They do make you leave the parks earlier tho.  If you have any other questions please feel free to email me.
