Notarized Letter from Absent Parent

Has anyone had experience with having to obtain a notarized letter from a parent for their child to go on the cruise? My husband and I are taking our 5 children, my two from a previous marriage and his three from a previous marriage. We know we have to get letters from both of our ex's that are notarized. Anyone had experience??? How strict are they? Do they just look at it or is it a major issue? Thanks so much!

I have been taking my youngest daughter on cruises since 1998, when she was 14. Her mother has been deceased since she was 5 and I have yet to be asked for any kind of permission letter from her absentee parent. I did carry a copy of her mother's death certificate just in case, but no one ever asked, and I'm not tlaking about just one cruise line either. I would recommend that you go prepared just in case, but I expect that you will not be questioned.

I have been taking my daughter on trips out of Canada for the past 8 years. I have always had the notarized letter. In 15 times I was asked for it once. I asked the customs agent (U.S.) if there was some sort of criteria that they looked for and he told me that he was a single parent himself so he always asked. None of the others did.

I feel better with the letter anyways. It costs about $20 is all. We usually do up one letter a year covering any possible trips that we might take. It just makes life easier.

If you are in the US your bank that you have a checking account with will normally notarize your letter for free. All local banks here in Nj do if you are a customer. we took my step son and no one ever asked for a letter. I guess they just assume this day in age not everyone in the family has the same last name

Just wondering if any of you have had any experience with bringing a niece or nephew, if the cruise line then asked for a notarized letter and if it had to be from both parents or one parent. My niece is traveling with us in a week and we have a letter from mom but dad has never been in the picture so we do not have one from him, has anyone had any problems with this?

The Airlines due this on flights to Mexico and some other Central and Latin American countries. This is due to the local goverment laws in these countries. I work for a major airline and one of my coworkers could not get on a flight to Cancun, he did not have the letter.
