Ocho Rios - Tour or Taxi

Will be going to Ocho Rios on a future cruise aboard the Voyager of the Seas. Have been to Ocho Rios twice before and took the ship tours both times. We will be travelling with friends (with their two kids) and are looking at the options, as we all want to go do Dunn's River Falls. We definitely will not venture on our own. Would like to hear from other cruisers about their past experiences and recommendations regarding organized ship tours, vs. taxi experiences, vs. private tours such as Peat Taylor's. Thanks.

Highly recommend Peat Taylor. For about $30 per person (minors about $20), Peat will take you to Dunn's River Falls, then on to Fern Gulley and a trip through some local neighborhoods. Finally he will take you for some shopping or to a beach of your choice before returning you to the ship. Peat is very personable and knowledgable.

How do we contact Peat Taylor? Is he there when the ship docks? Is there enough time to do all of that?

My wife and I went on the Peat Taylor tour May 13, 2003 (Explorer of the Seas) and thoroughly enjoyed his humor. He can be reached at oneiltay@cwjamaica.com

He also has a website at http://www.geocities.com/peattaylor/island_tour.html

As advertised we were part of the first group to go up Dunn's River Falls. He also gives some good advice about dealing with the venders there which we keep you from buying something you don't want. A word of caution, however, the venders will do all they can to make you feel guilty.

Peat goes whereever the group wants to go. His website lists some of the attractions, so it would be a good idea to get familiar with them beforehand. If you've never been off the beaten path in a third world country you'll have an eye opening experience as you see how much of the world lives. On our tour some wanted to eat at Jerk Center (it was great) while others went back to the ship to eat. Peat then picked the group up and Jerk Center, dropped us off downtown for some shopping, and then went back to the ship to pick up the rest of the group so they could do some shopping. It's a great deal for $30 (remember that Dunn's Fall costs $10 which is included). A word of advice. If you go shopping downtown I would suggest that you go to the stores before going to the flea market. That will give you a good idea of what to pay for souvenirs.

Once last thing. We left our camera on the bus and did not discover it until our ship left port. I contacted Peat by email and he is going to send it back. He even said that he would send it back at no cost to me, but I plan to pay him for his added effort. Peat's a great guy, he's humorous, and very personable. And on his tours there's "No problem mon!"

Peat has too many tours to be on them all. He uses family members as a substitute for himself personally. Dunn's River with kids and the group on your own would be fine in van from the approved dock area.. Beach there is very usuable also but not a great caribbean beach if you get my drift.

We used Peat Taylor back in 1999 on a cruise on the Paradise. I booked him
here in the US by personally calling him. He met us at the pier and took me
and my husband to Dunns River Falls and to Fern Gully. He is a very nice and
gentle man. He has kids of his own so he is great with them. We watched him
stop and scold a couple of little kids who were skipping school. I would personally
recommend him if you can book him. He is great.

We did A-Z promotion last week and were assigned an excellent tour guide/driver by the name of Oscar. Belinda (the owner) was excellent with returning E-Mails and she (and your tour guide/driver) will groom the tour exactly to your specifications. When I was making our arrangements we traded E-Mails 4 or 5 times in a 2 to 3 hour time frame and this was on Easter Sunday.
