Ocho Rios

One more question!

We'll be in Ocho Rios, and want to go to Dunn's River Falls. I've been to Jamaica before and know how scary it can be. Here's the thing...all we want to do is go and climb the falls. We don't want the three hour tour, we don't want a sailboat ride or catamaran ride or a trip to Fern Gulley or any of that. We had planned on just getting a taxi to the falls and back. Is this not a good idea? There are three of us, two women and one man, all in our late twenties. We REALLY don't want to take a tour, just because we can't find one that just goes to the falls and back, and don't want to waste time doing all the other stuff.

Thanks again
Maureen

You can do this. Buy tickets at the gate and take a taxi from the pier. I believe it was only like 10 minutes from the pier. Make sure you take an authorized taxi. JUTA. Should be on the side of the vehicle. These are authorized and you won't get cheated. Just beware of the marketplace when you leave Dunn's River Falls. RUN, don't walk through them and, for the love of God, do not make eye contact or stop to talk unless you want to leave a weeks paycheck with them.

We booked a private driver through the internet and we had a great time. The drivers at the docks were awlful but as advised we hurried past them to our meeting point, from then on it was plain sailing!!
For $120 total, 4 of us got a priavte tour and the bus to ourselves, we went to Bob Marleys place, Dunns River waterfalls, drive through Fern Gully, went to a good local place for lunch, Chef the driver drove us past a few so we could make our choice.
We even visited his house which is by a place called Firefly which is something to do with a famous old English guy called Noel Coward, wow a really beautiful place.
We are pleased we didn't book a tour with the ship especailly hearing the horror stories that night. Jamaica should do something about some of its drives, if they were more like this guy then the place wouldn't get such a bad reputation, we felt safe all the time, he made sure we were OK and did what we wanted to do, no pushing ever.
You can email me for his link or try cheftours2000@yahoo.com

We did a private tour of Ocho Rios last Nov. during our Panama Canal cruise. Peat Taylor was our guide. He was Excellent!!! Showed us Ocho Rios, Took us to Dunns Falls and waited for approx. 2 hrs., while we climbed the falls 2xs. Peat is a very in demand, he books up fast, and in far in advance! While waiting for him, another guide slowed down, and I asked if he was Peat Taylor - his response "I wish I was Peat Taylor". His prices are very reasonable. If anyone is interested in Peat's tours, pls feel free to email me, I have his email address in my address book at work. Peat's response time is very quick.

My husband an I both in our early 20's did the same. We paid for our taxi upfront roundtrip (it was a like a bus) at port.
The only bad part was when looking for your taxi, after climbing the falls, every one wants to show you something. They ask your name as you go into the taxi parking lot searching for your taxi/bus and then start to carve your name into the item. I learned to be courteous but just said no money/cash. And they would move on. Go for it and have a great time!
