Hi
we are booking a cruise for May 2008.
Caribbean Princess going from NYC to St thomas, Bermuda, San Juan and Turks and Caicos. Are cruise ship passengers required to have passports by May 2008? As I'm sure you know there is a HUGE, HUGE backup and the government recently cancelled the "passport" only rule supposedly until next summer. Took 4 months to get mine!!! YIKES.
Any info would be great

Hard to say, but I would never leave the country without one. if something happens to you in a foriegn country, it could take a while to get back since it's required for flying.

If you read the official notices carefully you will see you must have a passport for 2008.

That's not correct, the rule is suspended, only for people who have already applied for their passport, but have not yet received them and it only lasts until the end of THIS summer, not next summer.

Here's a quote from the official governement page:
U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air by presentation of a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007.

Here's the official site for info:

<http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html>

Get the passport.

Thanks for that link, Gayle. I didn't want to search for it & I really should bookmark it since so many people are confused by the rule changes. :)
