One night after landing in Whittier

I was looking into someplace to stay for one night at the end of our cruise. We'd like to rent a car and drive to Talkeetna and/or maybe Denali. Is Talkeenta Alaskan Lodge worth the $260 per night per room or does someone have a better alternate lodging?

I was in Talkeetna 2 years ago on the way to Denali. Unless I missed something, there's not much to do in Talkeetna, but if you are limited by time, I suppose that is as good a place as any to stop and turn back to Anchorage. If you can, I would suggest you drive all the way to Denali, with a stopover for lunch in Talkeetna. The drive to Denali is about 6 hours (if I remember correctly).

Check out the distance. By time you get into Anchorage from Seward or Whittier, that day is half gone. And depending on when you do leave Anchorage, you could be spending lots of time just getting there.

Thanks - valid points - I'll look into the distances. I had read 4-1/2 hours - but I don't know if traffic is a consideration!

You will NOT be staying in Whitter - there is nothing there. The whole town is 175 people and most of them live in one high rise.

I disagree with the earlier reply about nothing in Talkeetna. We went in May, 2001. Although Talkeetna is small it is quaint and cute. The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is awesome. The view of Mt. McKinley and mountains is great out the backside of the lodge if they aren't covered in clouds. Don't eat at the lodge though, very expensive.

They have a shuttle they takes you to town for free. The food is inexpensive and good local type food in town. My husband rode the shuttle to town the morning we left and got some good breakfast burritos at a little place (sorry, don't remember the name of it).
We asked the shuttle driver - "where do the locals eat?" and we usually have been very successful with that.

If you can book more time - the Kenai Peninsula is very pretty also. I think we all need to go to Alaska every hear. There is so much to see.
