I disagree with the earlier reply about nothing in Talkeetna. We went in May, 2001.  Although Talkeetna is small it is quaint and cute.  The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is awesome.  The view of Mt. McKinley and mountains is  great out the backside of the lodge if they aren't covered in clouds.  Don't eat at the lodge though, very expensive.

They have a shuttle they takes you to town for free.  The food is inexpensive and good local type food in town. My husband rode the shuttle to town the morning we left and got some good breakfast burritos at a little place (sorry, don't remember the name of it).

We asked the shuttle driver - "where do the locals eat?" and we usually have been very successful with that.

If  you can book more time - the Kenai Peninsula is very pretty also.  I think we all need to go to Alaska every hear. There is so much to see.
