Our little dog Buttons went to Rainbow Bridge this morning

Buttons had an enlarged heart for about a year, survived a very serious pit bull mauling a year ago and finally died painfully of congestive heart failure this morning. We had decided to bring him to the vet this afternoon at 3 PM to "end his suffering," but he chose to die at home at 9:15 AM. The vet said they only schedule these types of visits for the end of the shift because the staff is pained by the procedure. The staff was wonderful and embraced us when we took Buttons in to be cremated. They sent a vase of roses...what a great vet office.

My family and I all look like Garfield. The pain is immense and seems as though it will never end. He spent most of his time with my 82-year-old mother since my Dad died 5 years ago. My daughter lives there, too (2 blocks away). We have the support of each other, but as a member here, I know you'll keep us in your prayers, too.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know that your brain is telling you it was for the best while your heart is breaking. I also know that you realize that the ache will get better in coming days but right now no words can really help. Just try to picture him playing with all of the cruise addict furbabies; all of them playing together free of all pain.

My heart goes out to you all. I know how difficult this can be. It sounds as though your vet and staff are among the good ones.

I'am so sorry for your loss of Buttons, it is always so hard.
Just knowing he is in a better place & no longer suffering helps some, but it takes time.
Sounds like you have a wonderful Vet.

It's never easy to say good bye to a loved one, and our furbabies are much loved, indeed. I'm sorry your little Buttons had such a difficult ending. Remember the joy and laughter he brought into your lives.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this, but I'm VERY impressed with a phenomenal vet's office like yours. It's such a shame your little buddy was in pain, as we never want our babies to deal with it. Smokey and Moose were there to meet him and they're all romping in perpetual sunshine.

My sincere condolences at the loss of your furbaby. We know how traumatic and painful this is for you. May you find peace knowing that Buttons is now in eternal good health. I'm sure my Topaz and all the C@ furbabies welcomed him as he joined them across Rainbow Bridge.

I'm so very sorry to hear this Olga, but please rest in knowing that since his attack I know that you gave him the best life possible. It's not always easy doing what we have to do as pet-parents, but our furbabies depend on us to do the "right-thing" when the time comes, but in doing so, they leave a big hole in our hearts and family. Your Vet's & Tech's at your pet hospital sound wonderful, just wish that many could take a page from their book on how to treat greiving pet-parents during this difficult time. Olga, give yourself time to grieve, but remember the happy times also. My thought's & prayers are with you today. :angel

Update on our veterinarian's office: Not only did we receive the beautiful roses on the day he died, yesterday we received a large envelope with a sympathy card of paw prints on the sand leading to the ocean. We also received The Rainbow Bridge poem on a picture of a rainbow and bridge, and another beautiful poem, One Last Time. Buttons was almost 11, but we started with this vet when he was almost 9, so it wasn't his vet always, but he (the vet) and his wife (also a vet) have a WONDERFULLY caring office. Yes, other vets could learn from this. If ever we adopt another little dog, we have no questions about where to take our furbaby for care.

Dear cruise @ddicts,

Many thanks for all your kind notes. I have read so many of yours over the years, but don't have the time to respond to all of them. I DO read them. You are a kind group who loves animals and I knew you'd understand. I know KathyC had a Maltese, too, and I'll never forget her heartbreak when he died in her arms. I guess the fog will lift someday. We still have to return to the vet's office for Buttons' ashes...another heartbreaking moment, I'm sure. When does this ever ease up?

It seems trite to say, but time does heal. Slowly the hurt goes away, and you are left with sweet memories of funny and loving moments. It will come, Olga. Know in your heart, it will come. ((((Olga))))

Thanks Glo. Hope it does soon. We are (were) in the midst of moving to a new home, including my Mom this time. We are buying a huge home together with the proceeds of our existing homes. Our closing is on Friday. Buttons was supposed to be there and now the home will be empty, although there will be many people there. I think we'll have to adopt another furbaby to love, when Buttons says it's OK to do so. Right now we are BUSY, BUSY and that helps just a little.

Olga - for whatever it may be worth, a peacefulness came over me when I brought Topaz's ashes home. I held her in my arms when I had to take that dreadful step to ease her pain, and it felt like her spirit was with me again when I brought her ashes home. I hope you will find similar comfort.
