I haven't stayed in one, but got a good look, even have some pictures of the "dreaded overhang" while staying in a Cat. 3 corner on Summit. It didn't look that bad to me, and i would certainly agree that it would provide good protection from the elements like for your Alaska itinerary. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to book a 1a under the "dreaded overhang". But then, I wouldn't book one of those anyway, because I never book a balcony unless it is oversized, and the only ones that are oversize cat.1 are on the stern of the Millie class ships (and those balconies are huge). Of course, none of the cat. 1's hold a candle to the Cat. 3 (FV) cabins, particularly the corners.
