Just signed up for this excursion with RCI. Now I am wondering if it is worth it. Has anyone been on this one?

I don't know about that excursion. We have, however, sailed through the Panama Canal and I found the experience fascinating. You feel like you are on this giant ship and then you sort of "shrink" as the ship in the lock next to you rises up in its lock. If you are interested in architecture, engineering, American history, or just the sense of adventure you get from being in the Canal Zone, then you will probably enjoy this trip.

I am curious. Does it just go through one lock and then turn around and come back out again? If so, you probably won't get the grand sense of the canal's design and you most likely will not sail under the Bridge of the Americas.

Yes, did it when on the Carnival Spirit in 2003. LOVED It. Took the bus from the port across to the Pacific side (Balboa) and got on the ferry. Went through the Mira Flores and Pedro Miguel locks. Then off the ferry at Gamboa and back on the bus and back to the port. It was great -- an experience well worth every penny of the $165 per person we paid.

Thanks for the information. The ship (Brilliance) will be just going to Gatun Lake from the east side. Sounds like the excursion is the same one you took lainie. Think we will stay with going on the ferry. Just one more question - was it really, really hot. Should I take a lot of water with us or is there some bottled water available on the ferry? Thanks!

That's a very good look at how the locks work going from the Atlantic side. We'll just go through it in that direction, then on to LA and Hawaii, continuing around the world. I guess we'll stay on board through the locking process. It should be interesting and worthy of a few photos to send home.
