Considering going on the Coral to the Panama Canal for 10 night cruise.
Does this cruise ship go thru the Panama Canal. I have been told some do not go thru the canal and I want to be sure I am booking the right cruise for me.
Thanks

Hi,

I went and checked out the Princess site on the 10 day cruises for the Coral to Panama. This is one of those cruise that goes through one set of locks, in this case the eastern set and then gets to Gatun Lake and turns around and goes back down the same set of locks during the same day. Several ships from a variety of lines do this cruise.

We did a sailing from San Francisco with HAL a couple of years ago that did a full transit of the Canal. It was a great experience and I would recommend this over only doing one set of locks or the other but if 10 days is all you have to take for vacation at least you would see one half of the canal.

The Coral does do several full transit Panama canal cruises but they are 14 and 15 days long which is what the one we took with Hal was (15 days).

Hope this helps.

We did a 10 day round trip Ft. Lauderdale on Sun Princess last year. It was great because you did go through one set of locks but the whole time we were saying oh we are so close we need to do a full transit to the Pacific. We have chosen to do that in Jan. as we loved the first cruise to the canal but felt like we really needed to complete the journey. If you only have 10 days though it is really great because you do transit the first set of locks. They have a historian onboard the ship that gives a lot of information about the building and workings of the locks as you transit. It really is a great cruise.

We are doing the 12 day full transit on the Dawn in April 2004. It also does a reverse itinerary in October. We depart from San Juan and end in Acapulco. I think it's a relocation cruise to move from the Caribbean to Alaska. You might check into something like that. We wanted a shorter cruise, but also wanted to go all the way through the Canal. This seemed like the best of both worlds - hope this helps!

If you are interested in going in October, contact Lori Cunningham. Just got an email from her with prices of $999 for the Coral or Island (Balcony, taxes included.) Also a great price on minisuites, but can't remember what it was.
There are 3 sailing dates for each ship.
Wish I could go then!! Haven't found a price like that.

We're going on the Dawn in October for a full transit. Reading David McCullough's Path Between the Seas, the first 400 pages were kind of slow but the last 200 pages are going fast. Building the canal was a mammoth undertaking, as was overcoming malaria and yellow fever.

I've not got a very good record of posting reviews but I'll try to do one this time, cowtec. We haven't been on this class ship and it'll take my husband a couple of days to get over what I call "culture shock." He has gone along with the malaria drug so far though--recommended by CDC for people spending some pre-cruise time in Mexico.

Whatever you choose, tia, enjoy your cruise.

Pat, this is our first cruise since '89 on the old Constitution - American Hawaii cruises - so it's like the first time for us! I hope you will post a review of your cruise so my hubby and I can get a preview! We are so looking forward to this cruise and could use any and all info! And thanks for the malaria drug tip - we will definitely talk to our MD before we go!

Tia, whatever you decide, have a fantastic time!
