i've said this before and i'll say it again - Chankanab is a 'fake national park' built solely for cruiseship tourists. the 'ruins' there are fake, the swimming with dolphins is fake and there isn't even a real beach there. well, there is a broad sandy area but you have to climb down rocks to get into the water. the snorkling? total joke. no reef, no fish and the water's cloudy from everyone frolicking with the cagged dolphins.make the quick (30 min) trip to the eastside for remote, beautiful, untouched beaches or go to palancar beach (20 min) for a mellow, pretty beach with facilities (cantina, restrooms) plus the advantage of an easy $20 boatride out to the reef for outstanding snorkling. swallow, calm water with a sandy bottom extends maybe 100' or so from the beach and the sunsets from palancar are worldclass. with a $35 VW car rental you can easily hit both these locals in one afternoon.
