Just got off the phone with a local travel agent and Celebrity cruise lines. They both confrimed that if you don't have a passport they will not let you off the boat in Barbados. Drivers license and birth certificate will not work. This goes into effect March 1st!
My wife and I now have to scramble to get a passport.

You are correct! I have been to the Barbados website and talked with RCCL. We are travelling on March 13, 2004 and now have to expedite passports or we will be denied boarding the ship in San Juan!!! I was told by two different areas at RCCL that this is out of their control and no one will even be allowed to board a ship going to Barbados without a passport, nor will there be refunds. Unfortunately there is no info regarding any of this at their website. PLease share this info.

I was in Barbados on 1/12/04 on CCL Legend. They did not ask to see a passport or any sort of ID at all. Some guy at the port authority terminal asked us where we were going and we didn't know, so he pointed out the visitors center!!!!!!!No problem.

Matj2000,
It says in the first post that it doesn't start until March 1st, that would be why you had no problem. It will be a problem for future cruises however. It is good to know, thanks wdblake for passing on the info.

The new law goes into effect on March 1 2004. as of that date you will not get ON the ship stopping in Barbados without a passport.
and Aruba is following Barbados lead.

All the more reason for travelers to get a passport. It is going to be a must have in the future. It really does help get through the lines faster thanwith just photo i.d. and birth certificate.

I discussed this with my travel agent & he stated that many cruise lines are now considering removing Barbados from their itineraries due to the new law.
