Thanks for the link...friends of ours are getting ready to get theirs so it's good to know how long it might take.

My husband and I just went to get ours done last Saturday. The women there told us it it taking at least 14 weeks if not longer. Thank goodness our cruise is not for 19 more weeks but even that is cutting it too close for me. We never had a need for a passport before this year as we've just started taking vacations. Our 1st 2 vacations were to Walt Disney World, no need for a Passport there

I'm glad we finally got around to getting one. At least we'll be all set for the next 5 years

If you're over the age of 16, they're good for 10 years.

I'm going on a cruise next Sunday + was told I didn't need a passport - Just a certified birth certificate.. Is this still true?

I'm going on Carnival Miracle to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas + Tortola, leaving from NYC.

Hello Rissahh,

If you do not have a pssport, you will need two items: your original official birth certificate (OR a certified copy of your birth certificate) AND a government issued photo ID, (like your driver's license).

The only problem that you might encounter would be In the unfortunate event that you would need to cut your cruise short AND have to FLY back into the United States. Currently you must have a passport to FLY into the United States.

If you cruise next year you will need the passport then.

Gayle V -

Thank you very much. I'm hoping not to come into any unfortunate circumstances that I'd have to fly home. I'll be sure to bring those two forms of ID's. Thank you again!

Also...please make note that you must have the copy of your birth certificate with the "raised seal" not the original you get from the hospital with the little foot prints on it. We had to go to the courthouse and get copies for the kids a few years back when we took them to Cabo. Our son in-law had to get his a few months back in order to apply for his passport before our Feb cruise.
