Passports at ports

I have been on cruises that only have required your birth certificate and ID but we will be taking our next cruise that requires a passport. My question is that when we are at port, do we need to take our passports with us when we get off the ship? Or is it only needed when you are borading for embarkation?

You do not need it off the ship in port. It doesn't hurt to make a copy of the passport information and have that with you. Even though you have your sail and sign card with you it is wise to take a picture ID with as well.

I completely disagree with that response! Always ALWAYS , have your passport when getting off the ship in a foreign country.

Yo! You are not always in a foreign country when you are cruising, ie the USVI. I agree with the others as above. If I get mugged while on a Caribbean cruise, I do not want my passport stolen. I keep the actual passport in my safe on the ship and keep a photo copy on me. If you visit the US State Department website and look up all the places your cruise is visiting you will be able to see which places in the Caribbean or elsewhere in the world require you to carry your passport with you. Most if not all of the destinations in the Caribbean do not require passports for ID. FYI...

jester95008 even though the cruise lines do not take the passport of Americans while in the Caribbean many do take and keep the passports of Canadians or Europeans until they finally leave the ship so it is not necessary to carry the passport in the Caribbean in most cases. As lainie says it is easy to check on the net to see which countries require the passport for ID.

Thanks everyone. I'm sorry I wasn't more specific. Lainie is right, the only port we are going to be at that requires a passport is Belize. I didn't think we needed one for this cruise, but our travel agent recently said that Belize now requires a passport.

In many countries it is not safe to carry your passport with you. American passports sell for BIG money. We have always left ours in the cabin safe. A photo copy, your picture ID and sign/sail card are all that should be needed. Check your daily, follow the cruise directors instructions and you should be fine.

Ok ok ... Well how about this then.... what if you lose your sail & sign card will in a foreign country like Mexico while your off the ship , or you jump in the ocean and ruin that piece of paper they give you? Then you have nothing to show for when getting back on...

You can always come up with outlandish examples of "what could happen." Just be a responsible adult with your valuables.
