Phone calls in Ports

I have talked to my mobile carrier and I know that shipboard phone calls from my cell pnone are going to be crazy expensive (like $7 per minute). When we are in ports (Skagway, Juneau and Ketchican) will we have our regular service back?

I don't mind not having a phone for most of the trip, but would like to check messages or make a call or two when we are on US soil and dry land.

Who is your carrier and what type of plan do you have?

I have Verizon. My analog phone did not work a few years ago. I was told that my trip this August my digital phone should work.

I have T-Mobile.

I would hate to make a call in Skagway only to find out that it was sent through the ship's tower....maybe I should just let go of any ideas of using my phone while on vacation....that isn't necessarily a bad thing :)

Throwing the cell phone overboard is always the best suggestion. But I too "have" to keep in touch with back home. Even if you are docked in Skagway and make a call from your cabin, you should still be on your local network.

You will only encounter the high charges if the ship is at sea.

We spoke to our Cell Carrier, AT&T who told us when we are in port, the ships system is turned off so we'll be charged regular cell charges. (We're on nationwide calling with unlimited minutes) but when we're at sea all calls go through the ships maritime communication system and charges will be 2.49 per minute. We were told we didn't have to sign up in advance to use our cell and it would automatically link us into the system. We have booked the Garden Villa Suite on NCL's Pearl to Alaska this July and are looking forward to the 3 bedrooms and 5,000 square feet to enjoy. Incidentally, the wifi is free and our suite has a complimentary computer to use but we're also taking our laptop.
