We spoke to our Cell Carrier, AT&T who told us when we are in port, the ships system is turned off so we'll be charged regular cell charges.  (We're on nationwide calling with unlimited minutes) but when we're at sea all calls go through the ships maritime communication system and charges will be 2.49 per minute.  We were told we didn't have to sign up in advance to use our cell and it would automatically link us into the system.  We have booked the Garden Villa Suite on NCL's Pearl to Alaska this July and are looking forward to the 3 bedrooms and 5,000 square feet to enjoy.  Incidentally, the wifi is free and our suite has a complimentary computer to use but we're also taking our laptop.
