Hello all. Just thought I'd pass this on to ensure others don't fall for the same scam! Those blue call boxes all down the cruise ship piers at St Maartens look inviting for a quick call home - Don't! We did and a 10 minute call to Tennessee produced a US$70 credit card bill! When we followed it up through our credit card company, we found the phones are operated by an "International Calling Services" based in San Ysidro, CA. Googling them showed us to be just two of an awful lot of unhappy callers worldwide. They do not publish their rates on the call boxes BTW, in which case, fair enough, buyer beware!
Not sure if this is unique to St Maartens - we certainly be more careful all round in future.
Our one bad experience cruising so far touchwood. And otherwise, St Maartens is a lovely island, and the Americas Cup yachting experience fantastic.
