I'm sooooo confused!:D Here's the info I need---------

1. Which Airport to fly into, LaGuardia or JFK?
2. Which Cruise Terminal does Carnival's "Glory" sail out of? Manhattan or Brooklyn?
3. Which Hotel to stay at closet to the Port? I know that hotels in New York are pricey, could someone suggest a relatively in-expensive one, depending on what Port she sail's out of?!

We plan on flying Air Tran up there, it's cheaper than going thru the cruise line, so I guess I'll also need info on Taxi service and how much they charge. So any and all help would greatly be appreciated!

Here's the cruise I picked----7-dayer on Carnival's "Glory" October 2nd, 2010, New England sail, "Fall Foliage Cruise"-Boston, Maine, Saint John, New Brunswick Bay of Fundy, Halifax, Novia Scotia then back to New York.

Thank you all ahead of time for all the help!

Now that I stopped laughing I will try to answer your post.

Throw the FLL/MIA mentality out the window.

You are in for one major culture shock my friend.

Carnival sails from Manhattan. Princess from Brooklyn. It doesnt matter what airport really.

Flying into JFK might be 10.00 more via taxi than LGA. Depending on the price of gas. Determine which airport based on the flight ticket. Delta flies into JFK.

Both airports will be a sea of yellow regarding taxis. You will also be bombarded by private limo drivers outside luggage claim. Private shuttle companies that will provide you a free tour of the airport and other hotels are a dime a dozen.

Getting to your hotel will be a non issue. They have a taxi stand and they are a revolving door. Making arrangements prior to arriving IMO is not really necessary.

Now for hotels.....before you start searching, go potty and do not eat or drink.

I stayed in Times Square for one cruise. I used Marriott points as the hotel was 500.00 a night(marathon weekend). The hotel is 11/2 miles from the port and took us 25 minutes via taxi.

I also found a BARGOON, a major steal imo at the Grand Hyatt hotel at Grand Central Station for 300.00 a night. Hotel rooms are TINY in Manhattan. I was very impressed with how HUGE the rooms were at the Hyatt. Another time we stayed at the W. The room was smaller than inside cabin on a ship and that was 275.00 a night 8 years ago.

Walking around Manhattan is primarily safe. Just dont be stupid about it. Most people dont own cars there, they walk or take a taxi.

When we sailed out of Brooklyn we stayed in Manhattan. I might have saved a few bucks on a hotel in Brooklyn but the taxi cost and sighting time.

I do hope you will able to make the time to sight see as Manhattan has soooo much to offer. Stay on the top deck for sailaway. The skyline is an amazing sight to see as well as the Lady. It is kinda gut wrenching sailing by ground Zero.

Now that I've picked myself off of the carpet, thank you Suer!:D Don't know if the DH will go for all of the "hustle & bustle" of the airport or not, never mind the $$$$ of the hotels! DH does live in the "Margaritville-Mode" when it comes to cruising! For him to get across the bloody street to the Port check-in down here in the South is a "side-show"!!!:lol So me thinks for the sake of sanity (on his part I might add) I'll switch to the "Dream" leaving out of Port Canaveral, we know that place like the back of our hands!:D Thank you once again Suer, your "honesty" has probably saved me from an early demise! If DH had to face that madhouse, he'd probably have my gut-for-garters!!!

Hey,

Just came back from a weekend in NYC. Stayed at the Wellington on 7th ave and 55th. Costs us $155 a night and was two blocks (walkable) south of central park and 8 blocks north of times square. The rooms are decent size for NYC just ask for a remodeled room. When we were there it was about 2/3 remodeled. We took a boat ride around manhattan from the pier next to the cruise pier Carnival uses. That cost us $7.50 plus tip in a cab and took 15 minutes. The skyline was great if you like city skylines and your route out of the river will take you right past the Statue of Liberty. Hotel had a good cafe right at the corner, there was a pizza joint across one corner and a good deli across the other. All kinds of restaurants down 7th ave including Applebee's and Olive Garden. Never flown in but both times the wife and I were there it was very easy to get around the city. Like the old saying goes "It's a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there".

Hope you reconsider. I live in upstate New Hampshire and there is nothing I've seen in California, Nebraska, and Massachusetts that compares to the mountains here in the fall. Colors in nature you can't believe and they go on for miles. It's why we live here. Cold winters with lots of snow, lots of rain and mud in spring, hot and humid in summer, and it's all worth it for the crisp fall day with incredible sights all around you.

We've only cruised 4 times, all out of Miami, but have been looking at one out of NY. Might be that one as my wife has never been to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia.

Good luck and keep cruising,

Chris

kitten, I agree that Canada/New England shouldn't be ruled out as a cruise possibility. We've been on about half a dozen of them and can't get enough of these itineraries. The scenery is stunning. One idea, if you are reluctant about New York, is to cruise out of Boston. Logan Airport is within a $20 ride of the city and hotels are a lot less expensive. Delta flies nonstop from your airport...done it plenty of times on business. And, as the departure port is further north, you'll be able to see a bit more of Canada or even go into Maine. The only thing is that Carnival does not cruise out of here... but Royal Caribbean does, and has done so for at least 10 years.

Kitten,

I'm getting ready to take the Canada cruise out of Manhattan (July 4 on the Triumph). I am flying into Newark, NJ (less expensive) and have booked the Super Shuttle service ($16 per person + 15% gratuity) to take me and DH to the Hampton Inn in SoHo (around $800 total for five nights). After the cruise, we booked Carnival's shuttle to bring us back to the hotel in Newark for $40 per person.

If you need more detailed info, PM me. I'd be happy to help.

Thank's everyone! I'm going to present this to DH and see what he say's, and MM, I'll hold ya to that!:thumb I really, really want to do the New England cruise as I've got my heart set on getting some beautiful photos of the Lighthouses (I collect them) and I want to do the Salem Witch Trial Tour and see the Coastal Fishing Villages. What is a culture shock to us is the cost of Hotels up there, down here in the south it's less expensive, plus DH absolutley hates "hustle & bustle", when we drive down to the Ports in Florida, it's nice & relaxing and when we arrive DH is really "layed-back" , except for when we hit Miami, then he get's into his "Police-Mode" and starts yelling at all the other drivers!:D He thinks he should be the only one on the road! But thank you all for the advice, keep them coming, I could use all the help I can get!:thumb
