Port of Miami / Carrying on Luggage

I've read a couple of recent reviews on Carnival ships which stated that carrying on all of your luggage is permitted. The last time I went through the port of Miami, the x-ray machines did not look big enough to accommodate a large suitcase. Does anyone have any advice or know what the maximum allowable dimensions are? My wife and I will be on the Valor 6/8/2008. Thanks for any help!

I've read about carrying OFF all your luggage. I don't recall reading about carrying ON all your luggage.

I don't know if all ports are the same but I just returned from the Carnival Paradise leaving out of the Long Beach port and you were not allowed to carry anything larger than a carryon onto the ship. A gentleman behind me got very upset because his piece of luggage was larger than what was allowed. From what I could tell it looks to be about the same size luggage you are allowed on an airplane. However you CAN carry all your luggage off the ship. That's what we chose to do this morning. They called all passengers carrying off their own luggage at 6:45 am and I was at my car by 7:05 a.m. It was the fasted debarkation I have ever been thru! We walked straight off the ship and there was only 1 person ahead of me in customs. It was great!

In Miami, if the luggage won't fit in to the x-ray machine you can't carry it on. I saw someone have to go back out to the porter with a bag that wouldn't fit.
