Where does everyone usually stay for a pre cruise hotel..What hotels are close to the cruise terminal? Are you able to walk to the terminal or must you take a cab like you do in Miami?

We booked a two night pre-cruise through Royal Caribbean. We stayed at the Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. It was a little pricey, and included transfers to the ship. The hotel was beautiful, we can't wait to go back. You can book it much cheaper through Expedia, and the transfers were not worth the price. I would rather have taken a taxi to the port., as the transfer was two hours late. If you are cruising Royal Caribbean they go out of the Panamerican terminal which is across the bay from the rest of the cruise terminals. You will need to take a cab. It should cost no more than 20 dollars, which is cheaper than a transfer anyway.
