Don't need to hear any good news. I am so sick and tired of all the bad news. I am on the POA 9/5/04 and going to have the best time. After all, it's Hawaii, it's gotta be great. So if the food is not good on board, I will dine on shore or lose a few pounds. Either way you make the best of a bad situation.

food is expensive: last time we were there the Denny's grand slam breakfast, instead of being $2.99 or $3.99 was about $6.50! You can search and find some deals but do be prepared. As for the food not being good on board, Maltesemom, You have the right attitude. You will have a good time and how bad can the food be for heavens sake? Part of crusing the islands is exactly that: the islands! People cruising Hawaii will have to accept that whether it's yesteryear, this year, or future year cruising Hawaii is not going to be the same as cruising the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe or Alaska. End of story!

I was on the Pride of Aloha on July 4th for the inaugural sailing. I too have read numerous negative reports, and although it did have some poor service and food problems, it was a great cruise. I spent so much time on the islands doing the excursions and seeing the beauty of Hawaii, I did not care if the food was not 5* food. I never went hungry and could always find food some where. The pizza was great.
It's all about attitude. Go with the right attitude and you will have a great time. May I suggest you try the ziplining in Kauai? It was the most fun we had all week. Book it directly through Kauai Backcountry Adventures and save some $$.

How hard is that zipline on arthritic knees? We are 60 and always try and do something different on each trip we take. A zipline would definitely be different, but am worried about the knees. They bend, just can't put my weight on them when they bend--like do a full squat. Would we be asking for trouble???

Eating local Hawaian food and losing weight is quite a trick! I guess if you stick to papaya and steamed rice :) Just stay away from loco moco: rice, hamburger patty, and fried egg topped with brown gravy! Yum!!

But yes, much of the food in Hawaii is a bit more expensive than in lots of other places in the US. Unless you come from an "expensive" city like New York, Chicago, or San Francisco, then the prices will seem very familiar.

As far as the ziplining is concerned, there is some jarring on the knees during the landings. You aren't doing a full squat but you are landing quite solidly on your feet and it would probably affect the knees. I'm not really sure. I do know that it is a fantastic excursion and quite exciting, especially with the scenic background of Kauai. Awesome!

I just did the zipline in Maui on the 7/18 cruise and would suggest that you contact them directly to ask them about your knees (http://www.skylinehawaii.com/default.htm ). I would think the landing would be hard on you, but it is a lot of fun. I think the one in Maui might be tamer than the one in Kauai as they have a lower minimum weight. If you are going in a group and some want to zip, the others can hike along and wait at the end of the platforms to take pictures. They do charge the hikers, but it is a smaller fee.

I just got on the SkylineHawaii website because I wanted to see what you ziplined over. It looked really pretty, but I agree with you, the Kauai ziplining is higher and longer, and there is no way you can hike anywhere since you are literally up the in the mountains and we went from one zipline platform to the other without any hiking between. We were just zipping across from one side of the mountain to another. It was awesome. Maybe next time I go to Hawaii, I'll try the Maui one. Thanks for the info.

Hi Susan, I see that you are on the POA right now. I was on there a few weeks ago and I am interested to hear your experience when you get back.
