Pride of Aloha

I said the last Norwegian Sky cruise at the carribean back in July (or June??) before it go under reworking of the ship to turn it into Pride of Aloha. We got really friendly with the room cleaners and the waitstaff. We were told that the POA ships are now only hiring US citizens and hold on to your seats, UNIONIZED workstaff. Could this be one of the reasons of the poor service? Go figure.

lisalovlee33,
The ship was always to have all US citizens as employees because it is a US flagged ship & needs to comply with US maritime laws.I believe that the Pride Of Aloha are members of a union though not quite sure (I need to research that one) What puzzles me is your negative attitude towards unions. Let me ask you, in your place of employment do you have Medical Benefits? Overtime Pay? Safe Working Conditions? Vacation Time? Sick Leave? OUR union brothers & sisters fought hard to overcome harsh working conditions so that people like you & I could have better lives.

PS I hope you are enjoying your Labor Day Holiday weekend. Remember that Labor Day was put forth to HONOR union labor! Read your history books.

My dad was a union man his entire career before he retired. But there is no union where I work and we have all the things that you mentioned: Medical Benefits. Overtime Pay. Safe Working Conditions. Vacation Time. Sick Leave. And no union dues. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing the folks on POA unionize if it was a strong union that dealt with real issues, not trying to rip off the company. With some unions you're better off without one.

dalwhitt,
Let me clarify myself, I was not trying to say that you must be union to enjoy these benefits I was simply saying that before unions fought for workers rights such conditions did not exist. i was upset with what I felt was a union bashing statement on the previous post. To be fair & equal I also do not care for unions that abuse their power. I too was raised in a home where my father was union & have continued that tradtion, I am also an instructor in our local & try to emphasise to my apprentices to have union pride by doing the best job possible & to give our employers a good 8 hours work for 8 hours of good pay.

Hey, I'm not saying staff shouldn't have any benefits or the reasons behind it. You can spin it anyway you like and even imply that I'm an ass for saying that everything sucked when we're on a unionized ship. The fact still stands. When you have a unionized staff on a cruise ship, the service takes a dive. That was my point. You can choose to be in denial and argue otherwise, your choice. When someone pays over $2000 for a cruise, the least they can expect is cleanliness in my room and hallways. And your name and address is not really necessary. I don't have any urge of contacting you to argue about something that is totally taken out of context by you to make me sound like a bitch.
I had a wonderful time in Alaska on the Princess ship over the labor day weekend. It was fabulous, thanks for asking. Couldn't have asked for a better weather.
