Princess Cays snorkelling

If we want to snorkel at Princess Cays, do we have to reserve our snorkelling gear in advance from our ship (Crown Princess)?
It seems like a lot of money ($24 per person) just to rent the gear, to snorkel from the beach - no tour or other extras.
I guess what we are trying to get a handle on is, when the Crown Princess docks - are we right at "their" own private beach area, or are there other areas very close by that have local independant operations to rent from at a more reasonable rate? $8 - $12 per person seems more like a reasonable rate listed by independants at other port's beach areas we will be visiting.

We are leaving cold, wet BC, Canada on thursday for Fort Lauderdale and will board the Crown Princess on January 9th. Can hardly wait.

thanks,
anne

Well, for starters, there is no dock. Princess Cay is a tender port. You will be brought right into the small port area they have built. There are no outside tours providers allowed in.

You don't have to reserve snorkel equipment ahead of time. You can decide if you want to once you get there. The snorkel huts have a ton of gear to rent. However, if you ever think you will snorkel again, it may be worth buying your own gear. You can often find inexpensive sets at places like Wal-Mart and Costco. The snorkel huts will usually give you a vest to use if you plan on going into deep water or are a nervous swimmer.

Great information above however with the new airline rules on luggage weight, it is not worth bringing your own unless you are driving

I guess it could be worn on the plane. The flippers could pass as shoes.

Jeanie is right, it does take up a lot of room. When you add Susie's snorkel gear, my snorkel gear and the occasional wetsuit for diving, plus my 2 spare leg braces, it is a all in a seperate wheeled duffle bag. :duh: Another checked bag fee.
