OK, how many of you purchase the Cruise Insurance?
Is Princess plan reasonable? Do you go with the regualr or gold care?

It's almost always to your advantage to NOT buy the insurance from the cruise line. TravelGuard is one alternative; there are others.

The insurance that the cruise line sells usually is to their benefit, mostly, and might not cover what you might need to have covered.

The problem is that you need to buy alternative insurance when you book your cruise (or within 10 days of booking). When did you book? Do you still have time to talk to your travel agent about other plans?

I do buy insurance, because I have a pre-existing health condition which might interfer with my bein able to go on a cruise. The only time I didn't buy the insurance was when the cruise was within a couple weeks of booking, and was a small (3 day) thing.

In the past I have purchased insurance only on cruises that were booked far in advance. For the others, there was a small window of time, so took a chance.

I did purchase the insurance for our upcoming Alaskan Princess cruise through our TA at www.cruisesonly.com -- not through Princess.

You do need to ask questions about pre-existing conditions, etc. I did learn a lesson from my last cruise in December.

That is, you need to purchase the insurance when you book the cruise. I waited until after we paid for our last cruise and the coverage changes, i.e. pre-existing conditions.

Just thoroughly check it out. :)

Princess ins. is not very good. I had to put in a claim and first your own ins. has to get involved and they want a lifes history etc. then a very long time later they might pay! Go with Travel guard they are great. But for pre-existing conditions you have to buy it within 14 days of your dep. on the cruise.

For my next cruise, I purchased the Princess (Gold since I'm a Platinum member) insurance because I wanted the "cancel for any reason and get the cruise credit". We had to sail on a 10 night cruise a week after 9/11. I was in no mood to go on a cruise and be out of the country and I don't ever want to be faced with something like that again....

If you want to compare policies, try <http://www.insuremytrip.com>. There are several independent policies there which can be compared side-by-side for cost and coverage.

The only real advantage of Princess' insurance is the "cancel for any reason" coverage. If you think there's a chance a work-related issue or world situation might have you uncomfortable traveling, then opt for Princess. Remember, you don't get a refund, but a credit toward future cruise. 75% with the regular, 90% with the gold. Otherwise, the insurance offered independently is generally much better.

BurBunny,
We got our ins. through Travel Guard and because we purchased it within 14 days of our cruise deposit we also get cancel for any reason ins. We did alot of research on ins. before this last cruise and they really offered alot as long as you buy it right away.

ljeanbrown, I think TravelGuard's policy only covers $250 of "change your mind" expenses. You might want to double check that coverage :)

We have found insurance through insuremytrip.com in the past. The cost of the insurance is based on the cost of your trip and your age. If you have someone elderly traveling with you, you might want to go with the Princess insurance, as they cover only by the cost of the trip, and not by age.

I would ONLY take the Princess insurance, in my opinion it is the very best there is. I fell and fractured my pelvis and broke my wrist in the South of France. My hubby had to make only 1 call to Princess and all the rest was handled by them--and in FIRST CLASS style. They air evacuated me by private plane to Paris, France where we had a butler and hubby stayed in my room right with me. Went back home business class with my own private nurse and when we arrived in Miami a stretch limo was waiting at the airport to take me to the hospital. IT'S THE GREATEST! We had no problem with claims and all the bills that my own insurance didn't pay Princess picked up and sent out a check immediately.
On the other hand we took a cruise on Celebrity and my hubby took ill and I had not taken the cruiseline insurance. I had to make tons of calls and pay upfront with my credit card to have my hubby admitted in to the hospital in Nassau for a cat scan. Then wait weeks and weeks for my insurance to pay us back. I finally had to go down to the head office and make them give me my money back. Need I tell you more? We ALWAYS take the cruiseline insurance, it might be a tiny bit more expensive but if you need it , you'll be really glad you did.
