My mom just got back from the island princess newyears eve sailing and was so unhappy with her experience. I recently found out that carnival owns princess as well. The most distribing part of their voyage was the rudeness of the people. I have talked her into another cruise on carnival and would like to know if we should be concerned?

Also we are evil smokers and have been on RCCL and their buffet was inside but only a couple feet away from the entrance was a table on the pool deck were smoking was allowed. Does carnival liberty have a simmilar set up?

I would love to know.

Thank you

From the Liberty buffet restaurant, you can walk forward to the main pool deck area where there are tables available; or, you can walk the opposite direction to the aft pool area. Smoking is allowed on the starboard side in both areas. Haven't sailed Princess in a few years, but I find that generally speaking, Carnival folks are very friendly.

I'm confused a bit here. Who was rude to your Mom? The staff or the passengers?

If it was one incident of one person being rude, then I wouldn't worry about that. You can't judge an entire cruise line based on one person's behavior, be it passenger or staff.

If it was general rudeness on the part of the staff, I'd have to be very surprised. Most staff on all ships bend over backwards being nice to the passengers. And my experience on Princess has alway been that the staff was even nicer than average.

If it was general rudeness on the part of the other passengers, then there is no way to predict when and where you will run into a group of rude people. The chances of that happening again are slim.

Although I do have to add that when cruiselines are described in stereotype around here, the impression given is that the Princess passengers are more likely to be well behaved than Carnival.

One bit of advice, If I were you I would call the cruise line directly and ask what their smoking policies are. I don't smoke so haven't made a mental note of any smoking policies. But if is important to you to be able to smoke in certain areas, you should find that out officially before booking.

I was on a 10-day cruise to the Panama Canal on the Coral Princess in December 2006 and I couldn't believe how rude some of the people were. At the time, I had only sailed on Carnival and have always felt that for the most part Carnival's passengers are grateful to be on vacation, excited and determined to have a good time.

When something really goes bad, I would expect people to complain. But come on, when you only get 5 shrimp instead of 6, or the coffee isn't scalding hot, or many of the other stupid remarks we heard, I don't know how you could possibly feel better by insulting one of the cruise staff.

I personally think the difference on our cruise with Princess was that most of the passengers are NOT on vacation, they are almost all retired so they're not really vacationing from work -- Carnival's passengers for the most part ARE on vacation and very happy to be so. Most of us agree, even a bad day at sea is better than a good day at home!

I probably won't cruise Princess again -- the ship, food, room, entertainment, ports and service were all great, just having to listen to so many complainers was a drag.

Hooray for the happy cruisers at Carnival!
