Prinsendam

The buzz is that all European cruises are cancelled. Ship redeploying to San Francisco for Alaska cruises that sound fabulous. I sense the Prinsendam has not been a huge success. I have not seen this info on a press release, but I think it is probably close to very accurate.

sail7seas - any insight into why you feel the Prisendam has not been terribly successful?

Thanks, Tina

I haven't personally viewed her or cruised on her so anything I would say would be sheer speculation. I don't really know.

The Prinsendam is an old and tired ship and looks it. People aren't going to pay premium prices for a "used to be". I don't know what HAL was thinking when they picked her up.

At the moment, next years World Cruise is supposed to be on Prinsendam. I wouldn't be shocked to see some REALLY low bookings. Wonder if they will think the bookings are low due to (a) poor economy (b) people's fear of traveling far from home or (c) people will not be interested on such a lengthy voyage, at such a high price, on that ship. Perhaps we may hear a change of deployment....such as Amsterdam or Rotterdam will continue to be the World Cruisers???

I think it is SO hard to predict what "everybody" will love. We loved the Noordam & the Nieuw Amsterdam -MOSTLY because there were fewer passengers and it just seemed more like family. We had booked the Prinsendam for Back-to-backs in Europe in September 2003 -and, of course, have been canceled out. I believe P is to THEN move into the south American market. I am TERRIBLY disappointed because -for us -this was an IDEAL cruise [ couldn't have BEEN better!] It was to have been "Baltic cruise" then 4 days "Wet Dock" in London and then "transAtlantic" into Boston where my sister and a bunch of cyber buds were already planning a lunch get-to-gether! Our 4 days in London would have just been Frosting on the cake; We LOVE London. The 700 passengers was perfect! I don't NEED climbing walls, skating rinks ...or even brand spanking new anything. We did Caronia in May and it was PERFECT!.
That said- We are booked on the new Oosterdam for next November -Med out of Venice and then the TransAtlantic. Gani, from or last 3 cruises [ in the Crows Nest] thinks he'll be assigned to that new ship -and excitement is running high.
We just got off the Volendam -the last [ southern part] or the Pacific Rim cruise -64 days all -we went 34 out of Singapore. AND LOVED IT! Certainly a few things went "wrong" - an ambulance met us at nearly every port -but on the other hand there were SO many handicapped people and/or elderly people; several wjo appeared to have early-stage dementia.......I don't know how cruiseship lines get around that; I guess they can't. I shuddered to think of a REAL emergency demanding REAL lifeboat use.
This discusses a BUNCH of "issues" - size of ships/ new Vs old/ clientel.......as well as uses of SPECIFICALLY the old Prinsendam.......Hope I didn't wander too much!

For those who want more info on the Prinsendam, there are two lenthy reviews here on CruiseAddict, one not so good by yours truly, the other, more recent and favorable, by a gentleman who cruised in her after we did, in Australia - New Zealand. Look in Reviews (top of page) under "Holland-American - Prinsendam". Good luck
